Cold turkeys means totally cutting off smoking completely. Cutting back would be best in stages.

I'm not a smoker so I can't really relate but I feel for you. While some babies do come out healthy while the mother smoked entire pregnancy, this is either luck or they can definitely have long term future problems with their health or possibly pick up smoking easier than other kids

I heard not to quit cold Turkey because it can give the baby withdrawal. Talk to ur doctor. I'm a smoker too and I'm six weeks. I'm trying desperately to cut back

I agree with Ashelen... I would not stop cold turkey with out doctor supervision. with my second pregnancy I smoked until I was 24 weeks... I ended up in the ER with my Heart rate at 160 something and that scared me enough to quit cold turkey (with doctor supervision) I also quit drinking caifeen cold turkey. Talk to your OB on what he wants you to do. I wish I had more advice on the placenta grittyness but I have no expierance in that and would perfer to not give bad advice. :) if you need to talk about anything with the smoking cessitation please feel free to PM me I am available to talk and will do my very best to help.

You need to talk to your doctor; there are medical programs that you can be enrolled in to help you at least cut back. If you are having a placenta issue, it is more vital than ever that you stop smoking or at least cut back but do it with your OB's help (they won't judge you if they know, they'll help you).

From what I understand, a gritty placenta means that the placenta may not be working as efficiently. While you can still have a healthy rest of the pregnancy, any more smoking you do has the potential to damage the placenta farther, and this is your baby's lifeline for oxygen, nutrients, and filtering toxins out of baby's system.

You must immediately speak to your OB...if your OB is closed tomorrow, you can call their after hours/holiday telephone number or you can wait until monday morning, but don't put it off any longer than that. Immediately request information on smoking cessation programs; they may put you on the patch and slowly wean you off that way (a common way for it to be done during pregnancy) or they may have another solution.

Either way...you need to make sure that you're doing the best thing for baby. is it selfish to keep smoking? maybe, but you're addicted, and no one is going to judge you.

You can do this, and you must do it for baby. Speak to your OB as soon as humanly possible, but try not to worry - the baby may still do just fine.
