Hi, folks,
Our forums are intended for discussion, so it's likely that we'll see different opinions, and we welcome all of them as long as they're respectfully offered.
For those times when you'd like to write about an issue without having to read conflicting opinions, our journal feature is pretty handy -- you can make it public, open to friends only, or even make it private so that nobody else can see it.
This discussion seems to have run its course (and looks like it may be running off-course at this point) so we'll close it now. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I would rather just get the test. It's what's best for my baby wether its positive or negative.
I figured I would just throw this in there....
http://allergies.about.com/od/medicationallergy/a/penicillin.
If you were to be allergic to penicillin you wouldn't have been able to take amoxicillin.. Good luck to you though
Oh and it seemed like I was saying I would just leave my baby there for them to watch. But I wanna clear things up. Me and the baby are gonna stay the 48 hours together. i wad meaning that I could sign an AMA and leave with my baby after 25 hours. But I'm not going to.
Lol bree! Sabby, apparently you know what you're doing and know one else does, not even doctors who do this for a living. Your 20, I'm sure you have years of knowledge and experience. Continue to do you as bree said.
So it was purely a vent. You didn't want any posts or opinions? My bad then, do you
So if I didn't get the gestational diabetes test you would call social services??? Or how about me not wanting to vaccinate my child all the way? I never said I didn't want to stay 48 hours nor did I say I didn't want to do the test. Unlike a lot of mothers on here I read and research things before I am told by a doctor that its "safe". There are a lot of judgemental women on here. This was a vent post not a "how many of you women think I did the right thing? Or how many think I should get child services called on me? Or how many do you think I should get the test now. Because no matter what you say my decision is my decision.
I was wrong, that it is a pap rather than blood work. Your reasoning just doesn't make sense, you don't want to take the test because if positive, your family is allergic to antibiotics, so you don't want to even take the test for it? But if negative you wouldn't need antibiotics anyways. And if something is wrong with the baby, you don't want to stay 48 hours because you say their is no cure any way so it wouldn't matter. But you'd leave at 24 hours either way. I'm sorry, but if I was a Dr and a pregnant mother told me the things your saying, it would be a red flag and I would want to call social services. Lay back, take a pap and do what needs to be done
I have an appointment on Tuesday so I don't think its to late to get tested. Was always told to never let someone else tell you what to do or how to raise your child because everyone's raising abilities are different.
That 0.5% would still concern me when it comes to my child's life and well being they literally swab your vag and your butt it takes all of like ten seconds and then if you do have it you discuss with your dr that a history of being allergic to penicillin running in your family I am sure your not the first person that has had group b that was allergic to penicillin and won't be the last if you are indeed allergic sorry but if you refuse to take the test that's your right but it's also life threating to your child if you refuse testing and refuse proper monitoring to see if the baby has it and life threatening situations against a child is a concern of the state child protective services if you don't want the testing or the antibiotic fine that's your choice but refusing the proper monitoring for your newborn isnt interfering with your no medication wishes its what is best for your child medically and as a mother I am sure you only want whats best for your child.
You seem to be the expert my dear, good luck and I sincerely hope that you or your baby does not have/get it.
The .5% does mean something because if I test positive my body could fight it off already and if I test negative my body can develop it. Either way the test doesn't prove anything.
Is it too late to do the strep B test? That would be the easiest way to ease your worries. I'm sure if you tested positive, and told them about your families allergies that they could give you a different type of antibiotics. And that would only be if you were positive. Not many people would want to leave their new born baby at a hospital so they could go home. So calling social services on mothers who do that, kind of makes sense. The best thing to do is take the strep test. They'll just draw your blood like they already have 10x before
Given your history, I understand your hesitation on the possible "unnecessary" use of antibiotics, however, taking the test doesn't have anything to do with taking the antibiotics unless you've tested positive. You are so close to having your baby and the stress of getting/not getting the test, taking/not taking antibiotics, and worrying about things like them keeping the baby longer and social services etc. just seems pointless. Get the test and ease your mind.
Then why didn't you opt in for a home birth and avoid all of this?
Me and my husband know the concequenses... We both know the risks. I'm just not fond of hospitals at all.....
Amoxicillin does have penicillin. ...my son is allergic to it
So you're siting....1 in 5 women have group strep b, the chances of their child getting strep b is much less if they get the iv antibiotic, those that do get it have a 50 50 chance of surviving and you still don't want to test for it and/or get the antibiotics if necesssary? Furthermore, if you happen to be that 1 out of 5 women who has strep b, there is a 25 percent chance your child will have it since you do not wish to take the antibiotics and then a 50% chance that he or she could die as a result. You won't even know your chances if you do not even get tested to see if your positive or not so your .5% means nothing.
I was diagnosed with ALL cancer at the age of 3 and in remission for 15 years. they used amoxocillen on me For antibiotics I have never used penicillin because of the risk of my cancer/ family history. And I get my information from educated midwifes and doulas. I also look at medical information sites, on this. I don't mind getting tested for it I really don't. I'm thinking about gettin tested for it at my next appointment.
Obviously there is a 50% chance since you could have it or not.... why not safe than sorry. Im sorry but I just dont understand. If you are choosing to risk it then in all honesty you do have to deal with the consequences. Baby could end up perfectly fine but why risk it
Strep b is something everyone has on their skin. It can develop where it shouldnt is how my doc explained it. It doesnt just show up or go away all of a sudden. A simple test that could potentially save your babys life in my opinion would be worth it. Afer all that is apart of the pregnancy experience not birth. You could be worrying about something that does not even matter.
20% of women test positive with group strep b.
Without antibiotics :
1 out of 400 babies get group strep b.
With antibiotics :
1 out of 2500 babies get group strep b.
50% of babies die from group strep b.
So its a 0.5% chance of my baby passing away from group strep b.
So you don't know if you're even allergic to antibiotics, and even if your baby needs them to potentially survive, you wouldn't get them? WoW! Where do you get your sources from out of curiousity? A blog? a ******* site? or a reputable medical journal or .org site?
I agree with Donna....its a swab going in your vagina...not a big deal and you can be stressing for absolutely nothing if its negative. What does it hurt to get the test? I think you're making a mountain out of a mole hill and possibly jeopordizing your childs health for reasons that don't seem to make much sense. Why not get the test and if its positive you can go from there and talk to a highly educated physician about your concerns.
