I had the CVS due to family history, and we just wanted to be prepared early on if there were any complications.
If there's no family history or other high-risk reason, they usually don't recommend having a CVS test done. I had one done at 10 weeks when I was in my mid-30's and delivered a healthy baby girl. From what I understand, it's very important to use only a doctor who's performed many CVS tests. The statistics can be scary .. but from what I recall (this was 16 yrs ago), the negative talk is due to inexperienced doctors performing this test.
I've had Amnio, too. A CVS isn't bad at all.
Good Luck!
