Constipated

So I've barely passed a bowel in a week. I'm only 8 weeks pregnant but I am so constipated and bloated I look at least 4 months pregnant. It's painful and extremely uncomfortable. What do I do? What can I take?

I've been constipated since the beginning. Fiber and water, like everybody said. I used prune juice one day, and it worked really well (I ended up with diarrhea within an hour, so if you go that route, make sure you can stay at home).

I was constipated like this once in my first trimester. Doctor told me to try a enema I did and still got no relief. Then my doctor told me to stick 2 fingers in my vagina (tmi) and push the posterior aspect to get the bowel to move down...again didn't work. I ended up going to the ER. There they gave me a suppository and about 1 & 1/2 hrs later I finally passed a bowel movement (very hard ball). After that ER doc recommended keeping suppositories in the fridge just in case. So far I haven't needed them. I do however eat a lot of fruit (apples,  bananas, clementines) and so far no more constipation. If your in a lot of pain consult with your doctor first but I say try a enema or suppository at home. Hopefully you feel better soon.

If you can stand to torture yourself, do one of these three things (I've never heard of these being dangerous, you'll soon see why).
1) Eat something that gives you a bout of diarrhea. For me it's a 1/2 lb cheesy potato burrito from Taco Bell. I don't even eat the whole thing. Never fails me.
2) Eat something that makes you go very quickly. This one for me is the scrambled eggs at Denny's. I don't know why, but after about ten minutes, it's a toilet or my pants, no questions asked.
3) Drink about 60 oz of water in four hours. I did this by sheer accident at college one evening. I was so bored in algebra I was literally drinking water to stay awake. Several hours later, I was stuck in my bathroom for 45 minutes straight. This in particular gave me horrendously painful cramps and I found it pretty demoralizing, but it definitely worked.

Also had a similar situation in the beginning of my pregnancy. It will pass.  For now lots and lots of water. Prune juice can be helpful also, dried fruits and salad. I couldnt stomach veggies in my first trimester but some cucumber slices could help. Also if you can stomach celery is also packed full of water. Flax seeds on cereal or yogurt or in milkshakes. But your best chance would be romaine or other kinds of lettuce with olive oil (and I like lemon) dressing.

I dont think you need to go to the hospital. Fiber is the key but you need to go asap. My doctor allows metamucil. I bought the target brand bc its $10 cheaper but I was in the same boat as you. It says you can take up to 5 capsules 3x a day. I started off with 5 capsules 2x a day and I went 24 hours later which isb when it says it should produce a bowel movement. I would try that.
