Morphine & Pregnancy -Chronic Pain moms

I would really like to know if anyone has taken morphine in pregnancy and upon giving birth if their baby had with drawls or not AND what dosage PLEASE!

I have heard a few moms say they were taking Oxycontin 40mg three times a day with no baby withdrawals, but did not know if morphine was the same.

I do go to a pain management place, I am in severe pain, I do not need lecturing, there are times I think about just ending it all just to stop the pain. my vitals are off the roof, and I just cant take it anymore.  I am becoming depressed which is not normal for me, because the severe pain enslaves me to pain medications and leaves me little options.  My OB wants me to be getting pain management so I do not hurt the baby with stress. I just need to know the dosage of what kind of pain medication they were taking and what happened with their newborn.

I really appreciate it!!

I have to take codiene so that I can walk. I take stronger meds when I'm not pregnant but step it down during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Docs say what I take is fine and safe for baby. My first was a very chilled baby which didn't change when I stopped breastfeeding at 6 months and she's very smart at nearly 4 yrs old now. NHS website says baby can experience withdrawals from what I take but I've never experienced that. While docs tell me baby is safe I will keep taking them. What has your doctor said to you? They'll be weighing up your needs as well as the babies and making the judgement call. I know what chronic pain is like and have suffered with it since I was 13 (now 31) you need to focus on the positives to keep the depression at bay. If you ever need to vent you know where I am xx

I know this was posted several years ago. I used morphine immediate release (prescribed that way) while pregnant. I was taking 30-60 mg. three times a day.  Neither of my children were showing signs of withdrawal by day 3 in the hospital (I had c-sections). I also was taking two anti-depressants--one of which was pulled from the market after my second baby was born (17 months apart).  I didn't breast feed and knew that wouldn't be an option for me.

My two children are, at the time I post this answer, 14 and 15-1/2 years old. Neither have shown signs of addiction at this point. Neither child required narcotic weaning as infants.  I wish all mothers luck. My case, I'm told, isn't the norm.

Thanks, I have only had chronic pain for about two years now.  Its been so hard to adjust.  I do not like pain medications and often feel like a slave or zombie to my pain meds.  Just like I cannot be free.  Its gotten much worse in pregnancy and am often up a few times a night for a few hours laying around in agonizing pain just begging for it to subside to get rest so I can take care of my other girls.  It hard to cope.  I know oxycontin is pregnancy category B and Morphine is pregnancy category C but I was curious if it is more likely for neonatal withdrawals form morphine or oxycontin? I think oxycontin has a higher molecular weight and therefore harder time crossing the mom baby barrier.  Heard two moms taking 40 mg three times a day had no withdrawals, but didnt know it would be the same for the morphine or not.  I am taking 15 mg twice a day of oxcycontin and 40 mg of oxycodone.  I appreciate the kind words, they mean a lot when your suffering.

Your OB and PM docs should be the ones telling you what's safe to take and dosage during pregnancy. I have chronic pain also and know that it is more important that your vitals are stable then worrying about taking pain meds.  You need the pain controlled so your vitals are stable.  I wasn't taking morphine ( I'm actually allergic to it) I was taking Norco and fentanyl patches during my pregnancies which my doctors agreed was safe for me and baby. Unfortunately I lost my pregnancies which were unrelated to medication use. I would only take the advise of your doctors on this topic. Good luck to you.  If I can help in any way please message me.

I avent taken morphine in a pain management situation on a regular basis, but it was explained to me that morphine isn't absorbed into the womb which is why it is given to me each time I have been in the ER. Oxycontin I was told would slow down the heart rate, so use it only moderately.  Hope you find the answers and feel better soon. :(
