Safe heartburn alternative?

Anybody have a safe alternative to Tums for heartburn? I use Tums daily, but I am feeling really guilty about all of the aluminum I am ingesting. Has anybody tried anything else that works?

I have found that cutting sugars helps A LOT... I was forced to stop drinking sodas, juices, eat candy/ice cream, etc due to GD and found my heart burn has almost stopped, not 100% but it has substantially... I was taking papaya pills and they help but after a while they werent strong enough (they worked awesome before I was pregnant and in the 1st half of my pregnancy)... then doctor wrote me a prescription for zantac... drinking milk at night (before bed) helps too

It prob doesn't require much... I know baking soda helps alkalize the body so i may start trying that too. happy mommybear I chugged water every time I burned yesterday and it did seem to help. I only had about 6 Tums vs. my norm 10

I am killing a bottle a week myself, and yes just the regular strength :)  Thank you all. I'm gonna try just about everything listed so I can find something that works! I don't think all the extra antacids are helping my going to the bathroom prob much either so I really need to find something else that works!

I'd rather just go to the doctor & get something like Zantac as mentioned above than have to take 10 tums a day.. whether it's "okay" or not, that's just too much..

good luck!!! (((:

I have posted this a couple times so it may be a repeat for people who have already read it...but my cousin had really bad heartburn and acid reflux when she would try to go to sleep at night but hated taking medicine, so she would mix about a tsp of baking soda with a small cup of water, just warm enough to help it dissolve and just enough water to chug. She would chug that then wash it down with a glass of regular water. She said by the time she walked from her kitchen to her bedroom it was totally gone! I don't have heartburn during pregnancy but she swore by it because hers was so bad.

Drink a glass of milk or if lactose intolerant, soy or almond milk. Milk is an acid equalizer. Hope this helps!

I usually end up taking between 2 and 4 tums a day. Less earlier on but now that I'm 35 weeks the heartburn is hard to ignore.

10 a day?!!!! my bottle of TUMS clearly says, "if pregnant, do not take more than 5 tablets in 24 hours." even NOT pregnant, the bottle says not to take more than 7 tablets in 24 hours.

UNLESS, you have a different strength than me? I have the Ultra Strength 1000..

I took my first one at 4:30 a.m. & I haven't needed one since, but I've read Maalox was safe to use too. I have some in the fridge, unopened, but I plan on calling my OB monday to make sure it's okay for me in particular before opening it. good luck!! 16 weeks today & it starting kicking my butt early this morning!! lol ((((:

Yogurt worked for me last night when I had horrible heart burn, I didn't keep track but I think it took like about 10 minutes or so to work.
