Severe upper right abdomenal pain

What are some reason for severe upper right abdomenal pain?
I have preeclamplsia again and was admitted to hospital for 3 days for this pain and the oncall dr did an ultrasound and said it was my liver, said gallbladder was perfect. But then I saw my ob 5 days later and he did his own blood tests and said my liver function was normal.
Regardless, I still have discomfort that is gradually getting worse and kept me awake last night. If my liver is functioning ok what else could be causing this pain?

** Update** Wow, what a 24hrs! Well, it appears lots of people were right. 2nd ultrasound showed my gallbladder has decided to call it quits. Seeing a surgeon this afternoon. This sure makes pregnancy interesting :-/ On the upside, as I'm over the 20wk mark they said if they decide surgery is the best option then it will be at the maternity hospital so they can monitor bub.

*UPDATE* Went back to the ob this morning and he is running my liver function tests again and sending me back for another liver and gallbladder ultrasound this afternoon. Fingers crossed we get some answers soon! Thanks to everyone who have commented. It has reassured me it is not just normal pregnancy stuff and I need to push to get it sorted.

If you can go to a different hospital so that you'll be getting a second opinion and won't have to deal with idiots that are losing your records

Ok, thanks for getting back to me ramyamommy. I think I'm going to have to push for more tests with either my OB or the ER. Today the pain was worse again to the point we're walking hurt. The dr at the hospital said if I have another severe attack its probably my liver rupturing and they'll have to deliver the baby whereas my OB thought that that was a bit dramatic and unlikely and didn't schedule another appointment until early September.

No no nausea or vomiting
And mind you she was having these attacks starting in her teenage years when they finally removed her gallbladder they found just sand mixed with some larger stones and every pebble is a potential attack
They tried to blame the attacks on irritable bowel syndrome gastrointestinal disease
all of the research that she did was telling her that it was the gallbladder but doctors kept refusing to believe that it was

Did she have any other symptoms apart from the pain ramyamommy? The dr seems to feel if it was gallbladder I would have nausea and vomitting.

My mother used to have excruciating gallbladder attacks that could last a full 13 hours after eating fatty or greasy food she would be in tears from the pain she would even tell me that it hurts so bad that if she had a knife she would cut her own gallbladder out but doctors told her for years that it wasn't her gallbladder they always tried to blame it on something else

Your OB would not know as much as an ER doctor

Please don't think that way! I known its scary but try to have faith! I just went through my own ordeal with preeclampsia and delivered a healthy baby girl just one week ago. Just make sure you speak up if you know something is not right until something is done. Fight for yourself and your little one if you feel something more should be done. I'll keep you and your little one in my prayers!

The hospital said I was at high risk of developing a fatal condition called acute fatty liver syndrome which is on the same spectrum of preeclamplsia and HELLP syndrome. They gave me morphine and iv fluids for 3 days to flush out my system, I wasn't allowed to eat, then they made me see a dietician to start a low fat diet to help support the liver. They then told me to me to follow up with my ob but when I saw my ob he had no record of my admission and the hospital couldn't find my test results. I'd be happy to accept that the blood test my ob done says my liver is functioning within the normal range, thank god, but why am I still in so much pain and feel so awful? I'm really scared my baby or I am not going to make it through this pregnancy :-(

I had the same problem after multiple ultrasounds and test it was my gallbladder. The test were showing negative that I didn't have anything until a diffrent hospital did more testing and they finally detected and had to have emergency surgery. I would I insist in more testing. Hope u feel better!

I agree with above^^. If you are still in pain then you need to go to the ER.  I wouldn't even wait for an appt with your ob. Good luck and hope you get better soon:)

I would go back to the ER just for good measure, especially if you are still in a lot of pain. Was the dietician the only remedy they offered? Idk how they treat that symptom since i never developed it. Better safe than sorry!

That's what I'm worried about too MaddiesMommie14! The hospital took it very seriously. It makes me worried what they saw that my ob isn't seeing! Sadly the hospital lost me liver ultrasound so my ob is only going by the blood test he did.

If you've already been diagnosed with preeclampsia that sounds like your liver. I had preeclampsia and that's one of the symptoms my doc was always looking out for but I never had it. Preeclampsia can cause elevated liver enzymes and possibly lead to liver failure. Idk why the doc and ER would have conflicting answers though. :(

Thanks for replying.
Hospital said appendix was good too alid32, but that's what my mum thinks too :-/
The only other symptoms I've had addysmama04 is a really awful headache that wont shift but I know that's also a symptom of the preeclamplsia. The hospital made me see a dietitian and put me on a low-fat diet but my ob was a bit dismissive of that just saying he guessed it would help my preeclamplsia.
It just seems to be getting worse, to the point I couldn't lie on my right side at all during the night so kept waking up. Don't want to have to go back to my ob if he really feels its nothing to worry about :-(

Appendix perhaps.

I had the same issues. Gallbladder ultrasound came back negative. If you do some research on it you will find that most diseased gallbladder tests are negative only to find out during surgery that it was in fact diseased. Are you feeling bloated and full and burping a lot? If so, it is very likely your gallbladder. You can look up some foods that should help. My pain went away after about 2 weeks. You can also try a 3 day clear liquid diet.
