What to do next?

Hi all,

Just found out I am pregnant...5 weeks already, expecting around 24 January 2015. Big surprise, not planned but really happy. We live in Australia and are covered for pregnancy costst via our healthcare  from 16 June (we had a waiting time of one year when we changed healthcare provider). Can I wait for 2,5 weeks before going to a GP or obstetrician

What does a GP or obstetrician during the first appointment? Can this be done in week 7/8?

What else should I do in the first weeks? Buying folate?

Thanks so much for your help!

A lot of times a doctor won't even see you until after your 8th weeks of pregnancy, so you will be just fine! Before then it's hard to see the sack and you won't be able to hear a heart beat. So it's perfectly normal to wait. My doctor wouldn't even see me until I was 12 weeks along :) by the way congratulations!!!

I'm a Aussie too. I went in at week 8 and the doctor just got me to have bloods taken and organise a dating ultra sound.

In the united states it is fairly common for a doctor to not see you until about 8 weeks anyways.  I would say that you are going to be ok until you can see the doctor.  I would say just start taking your prenatal vitamins.

you are totally fine to wait 2.5 weeks - they can't see anything on an ultra sound until then anyway. they will also do a pelvic exam and screen for STIs
(in the US - guessing it won't be too much different)

do start taking pre-natal vitamins - with at least 400mg of folate and eat healthy.
check out a pregnancy book they have all the dos and don'ts - limit coffee
and don't drink alcohol and don't smoke anything
and no raw meat (not likely you are eating that anyway)
