What to very high beta hcg numbers mean?

I feel like my numbers are higher that what I've read about from other baby boards.
Is there a medical reason or a medication or even food intake that can make someones numbers be so high?
At 6 weeks mine were 40,996 and 48 hours later they were 52,000.
They did not double but they did rise......I don't know if that's good or not.  An early u/s showed a fast flicker for a heartbeat and there was only one.  Doc has yet to call me back for a follow up appt.
Anyone else have high numbers that don't double in 48 hours?
Thank you,
Andie

Hi ladies, I thought I would stop by and comment after trawling the Internet for hours freaking out about my off the chart high beta HCG numbers. I was so worried about not having high enough numbers, then the numbers not doubling at first... Then I had my first beta come back at 1750 at 14dpo. By the time I was just 5 weeks it was over 50000. Then I started to panic about a molar pregnancy- Down's syndrome etc. I basically drive myself nuts until I had the first scan which showed just a single baby and no evidence of molar or anything nasty. Then I continued to stress until I finally made it to my 12 week downs screening scan... And I am happy to say that our results were outstanding, coming back at a 1 in 9000 chance. So basically as good as it can get. So please, if you have high HCG numbers- please don't stress, this means you have a strong little embryo in there and all can and should turn out well.

Andie, there are no words to express how sorry I am to hear about your baby. You have unfortunately lived every mother's worst nightmare and I just can't imagine your suffering right now. I pray that this baby's a keeper and that you have a happy and healthy nine months.

Just to ease your worries a little bit, I went on a few sites about hcg levels and yours are totally within a normal range for your dates. From 4-8 weeks, hcg can be anywhere from 5000 miu/ml to 200,000 miu/ml. Additionally, once hcg is over 6000 miu/ml it doubles every 72-96 hours and since yours was over 6000 and you only checked 48 hours later, that could explain the slow rise. Lastly, hcg peaks btwn 8-10 weeks and then begins to decline.

Thanks for the info.  You didn't sound negative at all - I'm well aware that bad things can happen at anytime.  That's why I'm not bonding with this pregnancy.  I feel like you said on your pp, that a mothers intuition is THE strongest indicator.
I feel like things are not going to turn out well, I don't know why....I'm not bleeding, not cramping.....nothing out of the ordinary.  I just have a "feeling" in my gut.
This is my 4th pregnancy.  My first three children were uneventful pregnancys.  No problems at all.  I didn't even worry when I was pregnant with them.  But that all changed when my third child was born healthy and perfect and gorgeous.....but passed away three months later from sids.
I'm still not over it, and I miss him so bad it hurts more than I can describe.
So, I just feel like I've been cursed and now this new pregnancy won't be a viable one.  I feel like I'm now destined for bad luck and horrible tragedies.  I can't really explain it....it's just my outlook on life....it's very sad and negative.  I try to be positive, I try very hard....but it's a very difficult hurdle to jump over.
ANYWAY.....We'll just have to see what happens next week.
Thank you for sharing your story with me, and I am sorry for your m/c.  Take care,
Andie

I totally didn't want to be negative at al, just to tell you my story because all the docs were confident that I had a viable pg even with slow rising hcg. Other docs are so quick to diagnose m/c with slow rising hcg.

How did I know I had m/c? I was spotting the entire time off and on. For some women, spotting is normal but I never spotted before. They found out with my first u/s that I had a small bleed in my uterus and that was causing the spotting but I didn't believe it. A mother's intuition is often better than a medical diagnosis. I even saw the h/b at 8.5 weeks but wasn't convinced this pg was viable. One day later baby's heart stopped beating and was confirmed with another 2 u/s.

I agree that the only way to know forsure is through u/s. Again, hcg levels are unreliable for so many women. I really wouldn't be worried since most reliable websites that talk about hcg says that once they're as high as your's are they can take up to 96 hours to double and you only gave it 48 hrs. Is this your first pg?

Wishing you the very best for a healthy pg. I hope you see a nice fast h/b at your upcoming u/s. Good luck and keep us posted.

So sorry to hear that you had a m/c...it's an awful thing to go through.  Well, it was exactly 51 hours between blood draws and my doc said that doing one more blood draw would not make any difference.  She said the only thing she could really rely on was an u/s.....and I'm supposed to go in sometime next week.  I will be approx. 7 - 7 1/2 weeks by then.
How did you know you were m/cing?  Were you cramping and bleeding or did your numbers just start to go down without any other symptoms?  As of now, I feel okay.  My only real concern is that my numbers keep going up (but doc won't do any more bloodwork) and the u/s next week.  I hope everything is okay.
Thanks!
Andie

At 6 weeks mine were even higher and at that point my pg was fine and hcg continued to double for a while. I understand that for some people slow rising is ok and they continue with normal healthy pgs. However, for me, as soon as my numbers began to stop doubling, my baby was in trouble and I ended up with a m/c. Did you have your blood done in different labs? Was it a true 48 hrs? When they get that high, sometime they take a good 72 to 96 hours to double so don't get that worried at this point.   Wishing you the very best of luck and a happy and healthy 9 months.

I am four weeks today and mine are 25.  IF you do the math by the time I am six weeks, if they triple the way they are suppose to they should be around 54675.  That is great just thank God they are tripling.
