theproblem in my family is not that the stool is too hard or big to eject but that the whole process seems blocked. They want to go to the bathroom but nothing at all happens; there is no feeling that a stool has descended down the pipeline to be evacuated. But there is an urgent need to evacuate, with severe discomfort. All diet suggestions have been followed without result.
Please reply if this is your problem too
My midwife told me to find a hig fiber, low sugar cereal and sprinkle about 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed on it. She also suggested I eat at least one kiwi every morning and drinking a hot herbal tea. (Just be careful with the types of teas you buy, not all are safe during pregnancy.) Also, drinking plenty of water helps. I have noticed a difference when I follow this routine. I'm sure greens will help, but they're on my ick list right now so I'm not going that route. Oh! And dried apricots are supposed to be good too.
Thanks again for all the advice.
well girls..i have tried all you listed and it worked for awhile and now at 24 weeks and 4 days....yes, i am constipated again......i dont know what to do and i have tried all my drs suggestions...i eat mostly fruit and veggies....now what?
What worked for me was eating fruit and I love smoothies, I found some smoothie popsicles and they're wonderful!! They say they're a good source of fiber and boy are they! I would so recomend them. I know how ya feel at 24 weeks Im still having to do the fruit and smoothie thing to work everything out!
I have only been constipated once nad it got so bad that I went into the emergency (I didn't realize it was constipation). I was in so much pain that I was crying and keeled over. The emerg doctor stick a pill up there nad it got things working. I hope it doesn't get that bad for you but if these other suggestions don't work then you may want to go to emergency and tell them that.
Oh, I forgot my all time fool proof way for getting things "moving" Pear Juice!! Welch's makes a white grape and pear juice combonation sold as a concentrate. I even use it for my boys when they need it. You can also try prunes, some cereals that are high in fiber also help.

Thank you all for your advice. I will figure out which works best for me. It doesnt look like my dr is going to call back anytime soon so I am glad I posted this question. So thanks again!
I haven't given up my morning cup of coffee and have had any constipation issues with any of my PGs. It's totally safe to have a cup a day.
dried apricots and prunes you wont no what hit you
The thing that has helped me the most with bad constipation is prune juice. Its not my favorite thing by far, but it does work for me like charm. Sometimes I even mix it with a little cranberry juice. You could try to drink a little everyday. Fiber cereals like Wheaties or Grape Nuts can help keep you regular too. I think trying to eat lots of fruits and veggies can also help keep you regular. But the Prune juice has helped when I've been really desperate. Hope you find something to give you some relief, I know it can be very uncomfortable.
Make sure you are drinking a lot of water, add lots of fiber, don't hesitate to take a stool softener if needed (dulcolax or colace are good) and if all else fails, have a small cup of coffee, lol!
I was fine until recently, so I am busting out the colace again as needed.

It's not unusual if you are taking prenatal vitamins. I had read that adding Omega 3's to prenatals is a good idea, so went to the store and found one that was a flaxseed oil / fish oil combo. I got one that is an Omega 3-6-9, (whatever that is it sounded good), and it clearly stated there were no PCBs or mercury or anything from the fish. Maybe because of all that "3-6-9" stuff, the capsules are BIG, larger than prenatals. Lo and behold, once I began taking them, no more constipation! (I wasn't taking them for that reason, but who's complaining!) Probably I could have gotten the same result taking a spoonful of olive oil a couple of times a day, or taking more than one Omega 3 if the pill was smaller. But it's a nice side benefit.
No I havent tried that but maybe I will, it is becoming so uncomfortable I will do anything. I am so bloated from this. Thanks for the advice.
Have you tried eating a large salad? With mixed greens, or leaf lettuce? That ALWAYS works for me. Iceburg doesn't work.
