My Dr was more concerned about the ammonia aroma than the toxo bit when it came to the cat boxes.

They even tell those who have had transplantvsurgery not to clean the litter box, so while some may dismiss it, I wouldn't. My hubby has been doing it. I gave up when I got him to clean it once a week.

My doc advised against it thru the entire pregnancy. It's been hubbys job for 9 months lol but he doesn't complain he knows it won't get done if he's not doing it.

As long as you wash your hands it will be fine.
It is not breathed in it litteraly has to be ingested.
My Dr explained with proper hand washing I could continue to do so.
That its a slim chance of contracting. If your cat is an indoor cat its even less of a chance. My husband usually cleans it. But I'm the type of person who cleans it constantly! I am overly sanitary! Lol.

Toxoplasmosis is actually easier to get from gardening than it is to get it from a cat box.  For one thing, your cat needs to actually have a case of toxoplasmosis at the time, and it doesn't last long. Then the pathogen would need to sit in the poop for three days before it would be contagious to you, in other words, if you change the litter box every day there is no risk even if your cat did happen to have toxoplasmosis.  Then you would need to touch the poop and then pass the pathogen to your mouth.  It doesn't fly through the air, (and even if it did, you would need to swallow it, and it would need to be over three days old).  Get your husband to clean the cat box by all means, but if he is being a drag about it, put on some of those little disposable vinyl gloves they sell in the grocery store in 20-paks, and do it yourself.  Or just do it every day.

Raw meat can pass the toxo pathogen to you, or it can be in the soil, so take care in those circumstances too.

Hey sweetie! I know its hard not to take care of our furry babies as usual when pregnant or with small children. That being said hubby may not like to clean the box but its kinda his job now lol. I'm sure you read about toxoplasmosis that is the disease that is the worry with litter boxes. My first obgyn said it was rare but still not to chance it. My hubby had litter duty then and whined about it too, but just remind him its temporary. It might help to be extra sweet and thank him bunches too lol. Sadly my little marmalade (my cat) got out when we moved out of state and never came home. She was a doll when I was preggo and being pregnant again I miss her :-( Anyway sorry I'm a chatterbox. Hope hubby gets used to his new duties so you don't have to worry about it.
