pain relief other than epidural

seems like most women who don't go med-free opt for an epidural. but I'm sh!t scared of that spinal injection.

any other 'equally effective' pain relief options,  and how do they differ?  which have you tried and what was your experience?

I'm 36weeks, ftm.

I didnt have an epidural for my first and I was induced and they say that's harder than normal labor but anyway I was in  labor 22 hours and she ripped me front to back and no epidural I had iv drugs they didn't take all the pain away or even moat but took some away to where it helped me enough to get through it and baths I took alot of warm soaking baths nutses just have to keep eye on water going up to make sure doesn't get to the baby is all and cold wash cloth on face and was well worth it ...I get scared of needles going in my back bc one I have two bulged disks and two if they mess up you can be paralysed I'd rather take the pain then chance it ....that's just me though....good luck

thanks for sharing, ladies. sounds like the epidural is not sooo terrible after all.

no one mentioned gas? isn't there something like a laughing gas or sum other gas that you can take a few breaths of to numb the pain?

I loved the epidural. They numbed the area first before they put it in, and did it during a contraction so I was distracted. I didn't feel it either time, and the pain relief was instant and amazing. I have so much respect for women who can go without...i don't know how they do it!

I got induced so I was definately going to get the epidural lol.. They offer a walking epidural here where I live which is awesome. It doesn't numb you totally So I got to walk around,  bounce on birth ball etc..You feel pressure still but no pain. Although doing all that walking didn't amount to anything since I didn't dilate past a 4 and had to get a c section. But anyway... To me.. The epidural hurt getting put in! Everyone told me. .Oh they will do it when you have a contraction so you won't even feel it. .wrong! This guy did not do it when I had contraction and I felt everything! But once it was in i didn't feel any pain there at all and it gave me great pain relief!  Being induced ***** and is sooo painful so it was nice to actually be able to relax and breathe. But pain relief is definately up to you.. There is alot of options.  Maybe talk to your doctor about them and write what you want to do in your birth plan.

The IV meds don't work well at all and make you feel yuck. I've had four epidurals and I promise you won't even hardly feel that needle. It's great if you can go natural but don't be scared to get the epidural.

I did stayadol which is IV drug, I'll never do it again.  It made me feel drunk and messed up so bad I couldn't see straight.  It affected my ability to push and made me feel like crap and exhausted the next day. I've also had an epidural and that's my choice all the way.  I will never do IV drugs again!

To be honest with y'all those iv meds do not work. Unless you walking 9cm ready to have your baby. If you in labor for more the 3 hours you will be screaming for an epidural plus its only a pinch in your i did not even feel the needle because my contraction were so unbearable.

The little prick in the back will feel like nothing compared those mid to late stage contractions. The epidural made my deliveries and recovery much more enjoyable. My suggestion is to just talk through it. The docs who administer it are usually great at what they do. Don't mark it off completely.  My first one was 14 years ago and two more since then.  No problems behind it and the relief seemed instant.

Oo I loved my epidural.  My contractions were killing me and I was dying back contractions omg. The epidural didn't hurt at all. My contractions were hitting 90 on that meter and I didn't feel them at all. You won't regret it if you got it.

I'm going for fentanyl if I get pain meds. It's quick, wears off fast, but helps a lot.

I don't want an epidural either, i believe they can give you something called Fentanyl in your IV,I've heard good things about it.

I'll be honest with you,  once the contractions start, you will be in so much pain that you won't even feel the needle going in your spine. I definitely plan on getting it with this baby.

Same here ! Im very scared of the spinal injection ! And i also tend to have allergic reaction to a lot of medications so i know that wont be an option for me other than going natural. My mom believes in hot showers with a leaf that comes from southamerica that helps you with contractions and natural remedies that i wouldnt know how to translate in english and being honest it worked with my sister she has two kids and didnt even have an iv so ill go w my moms natural showers and drinks

I think they offer something in the iv but It is no where near as effective. I went unmedicated with my last birth and honestly it wasn't that bad. I mean it hurt dont get me wrong but it was like a working pain that I knew would end with a baby. I plan on doing it again this go round also.
