My doctor recommended the stool softener, Colace, as well.  I have a history of IBS (sometimes diarrhea and sometimes constipation).  Doctor said just DON'T take a laxative, stool softener only.

Water water water. Stool softeners but you still have to drink water with them. They bind to the water molecules to work. Studies suggest drinking something warm in the morning helps. My first and only BM of the day comes almost immediately after my cup of coffee

Colace (generic name docusate sodium) is a gentle, non-stimulant stool softener. One 100mg capsule once or twice a day, combined with increased fluid intake and regular activity, should definitely help to keep you more regular. Increase the fiber in your diet because that's always good for you, too.
