Hi there. Actually, you can get pregnant any time you have unprotected sex. So unless you are wanting a baby, always use protection. But a woman's cycle basically works like this for the average woman. The first day of your period is cycle day 1. Then you count from there. Mid way through at about day 14 for the average woman, they ovulate. This lasts for 24 to maybe 48 hours. This is when you actually conceive. Once you have ovulated, you can't get pregnant unless you have the one in a million occurrence of an extra egg in a cycle (very rare). BUT, sperm can live for several days and that sperm can fertilize the egg during ovulation. That's the way it works --- with the big issue being, most people really can't predict for certain when they will ovulate. Even if they are pretty regular, they can have an off cycle. good luck
