No. The job of godparents is to oversee the child's religious upbringing, or at least to be ready to perform that responsibility, and that is all. It is not the same thing as guardianship. If something happens to you and your husband and you have not designated anyone in your will to be the guardian of your child, guardianship will probably be decided by the laws of intestacy in your state, with a judge making the final decision. Someone being godparents will not weigh very much in the decision-making on this question unless they also have other qualifications that make them the obvious candidate. Write a will and name your choices for guardian, it's important.
