Hi. I got my results back from the triple quad blood test and tested positive for down syndrome.I went to see a genetics counselor and she said my chances are 1-126 and suggested the amnio. My appointment is march 13 and I will be 20 weeks.I'm really scared and would love to hear people's similar stories and outcomes
Thanks

Hello,
The results of my first trimester screen showed a 1 in less than 5 chance of Trisomy 13 or 18.  In addition to the alarming results, the u/s done for the screen showed that the baby was measuring about 9 days small.  Because my screen was done at 12 1/2 weeks, by the time I received the results I was told it was too late for a CVS.  Thankfully, the specialist I was referred te was very experienced and was able to do an amnio just shy of 15 weeks.  I don't yet have the results (I should have them Friday) but the doctor stated that the detailed u/s didn't indicate any markers associated with chromosome abnormalities and my original dates from my first u/s at 7 weeks may have been off which then caused the baby to seem too small and could have also thrown off the screen results.  Of course, we don't know that for sure but we are praying and are very hopeful.  This has been painful, scary, difficult...you name it.  I completely understand what you are going through!  Please take care...try to relax...your numbers are many many many times better than mine...hopfully it's nothing!!  You will be in my thoughts!!

I know that the FISH test is not covered by all insurances....

I dont know how much it was because my insurance DOES cover it and I didnt get the bill yet that I have to forward on to them.  From what I have read online, the costs really vary from doctor/location/etc - you should check with your doctor or U/S tech as to the costs, but I think mostly I have read it is around $150-200.

It was SOOO worth it to get the early results!  It was soo good for my peace of mind.  Usually the end culture results match the FISH results 98.5% of the time, so if they come back normal, you get that peace of mind two weeks earlier.

Pookie1121  how much money is it for the fish results? Do I just pay at the time I get the test done?
Thanks so much for the replies!

FISH results is the quick results test.

When you have a CVS or amnio, the normal results take two weeks because the cells are cultured.  However there is a FISH test that gives you preliminary results in about two days.

I had a CVS (placenta biopsy) which is similar to the amnio, but can be done about 4 weeks before.  In both tests, a long needle goes through your belly, but in the CVS they take placenta (chorion) cells and in the amnio, they take amnio fluid.  I had the CVS done because Twin A had a down syndrome risk of 1:28 and Twin B had a risk of 1:47 after the NT scan.

MY quick two day results showed no chromosome abnormalities and two weeks later we got the final culture results that confirmed the babies didnt have any chromosome abnormalities - no down, no trisomy, nothing!  :)

I don't know exactly what FISH results are...I do know it has something to do with chromosomes and them checking for chromosome anomaly.  We considred PGD and they do this to the embryo before they implant it.  It's similar to the diagnostic testing they do when they analyze the amnio cells

I got my triple quad blood test back yesterday and it was positive for trisomy 18. I went to the genetics counselor today and they did the level 2 ultrasound and an amnio. They told me every thing looked great but I had the amnio anyways. My chances were 1 in 25. The amnio hurt a little and now im a little crampy but I think its worth it. I know its just a screening but I was scared to death. I feel much better knowing everything was normal on the ultrasound. I have to wait 10 days for the results of the amnio but they told me not to worry that they think all is great. The good thing about all this is they could see the sex of the baby (boy) so that helped.Good luck and dont read to much online it just scares you way to much. Remember its just a screening it does not mean your baby has this.
