weight gain at 18 Weeks

i am 18 weeks and 2 days. This is our first baby. And we are having a boy. At my appointments the doctor continually tells me that I have gained "Entirely Too Much Weight" I have gained a total of 14 lbs this whole time. I am a fairly heavy person but my body fat is only 27%. I am in the military and I am guessing that he is going by those weight charts. But, i have never been out of regulations because they always go by my body fat. I am just wondering if anybody else has gained as much weight as i have. He has also told me that the total weight i should gain for my whole pregnancy is 10-15 lbs MAX. can somebody put my mind at ease. thanks!

Maybe because you are seeing a military doctor he's telling you that.  I don't think it's too bad...i gained in the past 30 to 35 pounds per pregnancy.  I don't know you're starting weight however...but in your picture you don't look heavy at all.   I wouldn't worry too much about the weight gain.  Just be careful what you eat and try not to eat processed food.   Stay away from sugar.

I started out heavier than I wanted to be for this pregnancy.   I will see if my doc says something at my next visit.  I see the doc next week.

I have gained about the same as you so far, my doctor says its fine. With my first 2 pregnancys I put on about 15 lbs during the 1st trimester and then slowly put on the rest, gaining 25 lbs with the first and 35 lbs with my 2nd. My 3rd pregnany I only put on 15 lbs total, but I started off a little heavier. This time I can honestly say I am tipping the scales because I still have baby weight from my now 6 month old. I think that if you are gaining the weight on healthy foods I wouldnt worry too much, but if its fast food and dougnuts all the time I would start to make healthyier choices. I think your doctor should ease up a bit:) Every woamn and pregnancy is diffrent, I think your gain is totally normal. Do not diet during pregnancy, my hubby still thinks I should be working out trying to lose weight from the last baby!! MEN, I tell you, lol. He told me last night that I need to hurry up with this pregnancy. When I asked why? he started complaining about the pregnancys being so close together and how much weight he's putting on, lol!!

My dr told me on my first visit to only gain about 10 pounds the first 20 weeks, and gave me pamplets about excersicing.  I was vomiting everyday so excersice was a joke, and barely eating, yet I gained more weight.  Prior to being pregnant I didn't eat carbs or dairy and I am a vegeterian, so gaining weight by eating anything now is easy for me.

I told my aunt who was the office manager for a great OBGYN in NY and he told her that dr.s like that shouldn't be in practice.  Of course gaining way too much weight is not healthy. but your weight gain is right on with me.  Everyone tells me that I am all belly and boobs.  I felt even better after my 20 wk u/s and the baby is super healthy...that is all that really matters to me!  I have gained 20 pounds already and am 20 wks 4 days.  I am just listening to my body and eating healthy, but not obsessing over my weight.  Is that the only dr. you can see?  Please just stay eating healthy and keep your baby happy!.

I"m overweight, and my GYN, when we talked to him about getting pregnant, wanted me to only gain 10 lbs during pregnancy.  I also had back surgery in 2008, so extra weight isn't too good anyway.  My OB doesn't seem as concerned, even with my starting weight.  I am 16 and half weeks and I have only gained 5 lbs (and I gotta say most of it is in my boobs).  I have days where I have more water weight gain than others, but it evens out in the end.  I'm actually very happy with my weight gain so far, and now that it's getting warmer in MD, I will start my walking program up again, to keep my continued weight gain healthy for my back and the baby.
When I told my sister what my GYN had said, she said there is no way.  Her son alone was almost 10 lbs!

I don't think you've gained too much so far...just try to eat well, walk as much as you can, and let nature take care of the rest. I'm a heavy woman - have been all my life (I'm a size 16/18). But, for whatever reason, I tend to not gain weight with my pregnancies. 12 pounds total with my daughter, 4 pounds with my son, and this time I'm 20 weeks and have lost one pound as of today. So, everyone is different. Focus on your HEALTH, not on your weight, and you'll be fine!

It's not all men...my boyfriend is concerned as to whether I'm gaining -enough- weight.  I was borderline underweight to begin with, and I'm a little behind my goals, so yeah.

I started off about 30 pounds over weight with this pregnancy and I asked my ob how much I should gain. I figured I would be in the 10 to 15 range since I was already heavy, but she said that unless you are morbidly obese you should plan on gaining 25 to 35 pounds.

I don't think you've gained too much, your ob is just uptight.

They say 25-35lbs is normal, if you start off underweight, you will or should put on more / if you start off overweight, you should put on less.

I am normal weight. With my first pregnancy I put on 22 lbs.

Now I am 17w+0d and have put on about 9 lbs and am pregnant with twins.   (At first I  thought I had put on 12lbs and worried that that was too much, but one of our scales is broken...so now that I noticed that it is only 9lbs, I wonder if that is enough!  I guess I need something to worry about.  The belly is huge either way.)

I have gained 15 pounds- I am 20 weeks.  With my previous 3 pregnancies, I had gained MUCH more than that at this point! lol  I gained 35-50 pounds with those, but I am trying t keep this one around 25-30.  Of course, I am starting heavier, too, though still "average" I guess.

I love my midwives, every visit they say, "Yay! You gained ___ pounds!"  (haha)  I *hate* to hear of male doctors saying a women has gained too much when she is clearly in the range of normal!! = (

I think you are doing fine!!

It is different for every person...I actually have not gained any weight!  I am 2lbs under my original weight at 21 weeks....  The doctors were a little worried, but once my 20 week ultrasound turned up perfectly fine (baby measured exactly on schedule and everything), they were not worried.

Your body will gain what it wants as long as you don't over do the eating part of pregnancy.  Your body only needs an extra 200-300 calories per day for the first few months... then it's bumped up to 500 for the next few months....

my doctor says the same thing that yours says - my bmi falls in the obese range (i'm a size 12) so he only wants me gaining 10-15lbs. with my daughter i gained 14lbs - and i swear i walked out of the hospital weighing 24lbs less than the day i had my daughter! so, go figure! i do have awful morning sickness in the first trimester - this time i lost about 10lbs by 13weeks. now at 19 weeks i've gained it all back plus 1lb.
