ive heard that sex and sperm can help soften the cervix weeks before delievery. i just have a couple questions. is KY safe to use during pregnancy? Also, do you think using KY will decrease the effect of sperm softening the cervix?

I have been told by my Dr that KY is perfectly safe during pregnancy until your waterbreaks (after your water breaks you are'nt supposed ot have anythign in or near your vagina, because of risk of infection) any water based lube that does not have anythign added to it, should be safe, but I would go with the KY since it is a name brand.
Heather is right orgasm can trigger contractions ( I always have several strong ones after orgasm) and the sperm does help soften up the cervix.
as far as it hurting have you ttried different positions? I don't want to give everyone TMI, but for my at this point with my baby dropped, it is very uncomfortable for my to do it doggy style (I know TMI) because of him hitting directly on my cervix (although if you are trying to go into labor that might be good for you) while in a side position it is'nt uncomfortable. Good luck

I have been using KY since the very beginning. I am so dry that it hurts to have sex. I never did ask if it was safe or not the Dr just told me to use a good lubrication didn't mention a brand.

The pig sperm thing is new for me, too - crazy if true!

Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for your sake that there are others out there with the dryness problem, but knowing that does make me feel less strange about it. My midwife assumed I'd have the opposite going on, so I thought my body was just weird!

thank you ladies! i hate that i need something but the last 3 times i havent been able to do it cuz it hurt too bad!

To PrettyKitty1 - yeah sperm is supposed to soften the cervix. I even heard the "cervical" they give you in the hospital to soften the cervix is actually pig sperm!

I have heard it is safe.  I have the opposite problem I have so much going on down there I don't know what is what most of the time.  Ever since last week I have thought my water has broken and gone to have it checked just to learn that it is mucus.  lol
Orgasms produce oxytocin which helps bring on contractions in your uterus therefore causing dialation/effacement.  Sperm has prolactin which I think is an ingrediant in pitocin... helps you dialate/soften cervix.  So, both are great help.

I'm reasonably sure that KY is safe during pregnancy. I think they use something like that stuff for exams, right?

Anyway, this may be TMI, but I'm in the unfortunate group of pregnant women who experience almost zero lubrication down there during pregnancy. So if I want to have sex at all, I really need some help or else it HURTS! I never even thought to wonder whether it was OK...

I have heard sex is great to help soften the cervix. I didn't know that sperms soften the cervix. I always though it was orgasm. Like having an orgasm or getting all too excited causes contractions. I see I'll have to do some research on this as well lol

I have no idea if KY is safe during pregnancy. I don't think it would decrease the sperm's effectiveness unless it has a spermacide in it. Either way, an orgasm should bring on at least 1 strong contraction. Also, Evening primrose capsules (taken orally) will soften the cervix.
