I live in New Mexico and if you are having a normal pregnancy you only get 2...one around week 11-13 called the first screen (or nuchal translucency screening) to assess your baby's risk of having a chromosomal abnormality (which you could have opted out of)...and the second is the anatomy scan around week 18-20...in order to get another later ultrasound you either need to be high risk or the midwife/doctor has to have a concern and wants a better look...with my first baby I only got the 2 ultrasounds however with this one I'm scheduled to get one more next Friday because at my 32 week appointment my midwife thought the baby felt bigger than he should be and she wants to check on his size with an ultrasound

I was wondering the same thing. I am 30 weeks tomorrow and I would like one more ultrasound just to see my baby again. My friend is also pregnant and she got a 30 week 3d ultrasound done at her doctor's office.

With my first three pregnancies I only got one around 20 weeks but with this one I've already had 3. I am going to a different doctor but in the same office which could be why. I haven't had any more complications with this one as any of the others

Depends on your insurance and your doctor.  Typically, insurance covers the dating ultrasound in the first trimester and the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.  Otherwise, unless there's a medical necessity for it, they won't approve another to be covered.  I think that is why so many women opt to pay for the 3d/4d ultrasounds... To see the baby again. Though my doctor recommended against those ultrasounds as there hasn't been much research on any negative effects of that kind of wavelength and the baby long term.
