The vaginal ultrasound is not bad at all. I had my first visit at 5w 3d. Like the others mentioned, they do use lubricant and it makes the process more comfortable.  However you do feel the movement of stick (not sure of the scientific name).

They did a tummy one at 6weeks with me and she said they would try that first because I'm thin...so if you are thin you could always ask for the tummy one....I was glad I didn't want the internal one...haha

I think they tend to do vaginal regardless of size :(

I have had a LOT of uterus issues over the years, had surgeries, seen countless doctors, gynos and women's health specialists and I still squirm and have a mild panic attack when a doctor needs to see down there. No valid reason, it just freaks me out. Now I really don't want to go have my ultrasound but I know I need to :(

I'm a heavier girl (5'1", 196 lbs) and they used the vaginal ultrasound on me.  My first pregnancy they told me that they typically do vaginal ultrasounds for the first trimester because it's really hard to see in there with the belly ultrasound when the baby is so small.  I'm not sure if that is just a rule of thumb for bigger girls (never asked... I was MUCH bigger then).  My most recent ultrasound was 2 days before Christmas and they didn't even bat an eyelash... Just reached for the vaginal ultrasound.  It really isn't that bad... Especially if they are nice and lube it.  When I was going through fertility treatments, they couldn't use the lube when they were checking on my ovaries with the vaginal ultrasound (they were afraid it would mess with my eggs) and THAT was not comfortable.

I forgot all about the discomfort, though, when I saw my baby last week.

Do they do it from the outside? Hate internal ultrasounds, I'm approximately 5-6 weeks but my doctor wants to wait until the second week of january to do my first ultrasound. Also nervous.
