i have lots of friends who have used them and loved them
no diaper rash, no leaking
less expensive over the long term and better for the environment.

We switched to more of a pull-up look when they start walking.  I have a few that have hooks and snaps so my little ones can't open them - this was more important at naptime/bedtime.  The velcro is pretty easy for them to get off.

My experience is, they don't leak as long as they are washed properly (meaning they are absorbant) and are the right size.

We never used the snappis (we have two and have yet to use them).  We found it easier to just fold and cover and that worked great.

I also took a class with a local company on how to do this and got to see all of the different types before I bought anything.  I think it really helps to see the diapers first.  Good luck.

There's plenty online about them.  Just go through YouTube and you can see different styles in use.  Pockets and prefolds with covers are probably the all around easiest.  We'll be mainly using prefolds with covers.

This is a video with a prefold, Snappi, and cover.  Pretty simple.

I would love to but I cannot get the husband on board or any of the people we use for child care. Kind of stinks but you do what you gotta do I guess. I had the same argument when we were preparing for our first LO as well...

i just bought newborn and small for now.
the company who sells them said that newborn size last only until 5-8 weeks and the smalls go until 3-4 months.
figured i'd get the next round of sizes when we get closer.
i also got a few snug to fit adjustables in case she grows too fast and i can't get the next size ordered in time :)
goal is no disposables, but since this is my first we shall see :)

I will agree that potty training happens faster.  Our second was fully daytime potty trained before 2!  Our son though was completely potty trained (including nighttime) by 3 and he used disposables.  We'll see when our daughter decides to move to a big girl bed and tackle the night time issues, right now she has no want to leave her crib.

As far as breastfeeding poopies go.  I nursed my first exclusively for 18 months, neither had a drop of formula.  They don't smell bad, that is true.  Also true is that you can just toss the breastfeed poop into the washer without rinsing.  When you add in solid you will may have to do some rinsing.  I just dumped it.  They also have flushable liners you can put in the diapers that help catch the poop too so you don't have to rinse ever.  The thirsties covers have caught some amazing blowouts (they've never leaked), the others that we have tried haven't faired so well.

happynifer - I wouldn't waste any money on medium prefolds.  We bought both small and medium and the medium ones are HUGE!  There is no way they would even fit my daughter now at 2.  You will need some small ones though, but you can use the newborns as doublers with those.  That is great the daycare will use cloth!

One thing I did notice is that my daughter had a hard time moving with all the bulk.  So when it was warm enough (she was born end of August) she went naked a lot so she could practice rolling, crawling.

Also for those that will read this... we never experienced one rash from cloth.  We are using disposables on her now for night time and we bought the storebrand thinking we would save money (now that she holds it well she pees a ton! and the cloth - we have tried everything -  just doesn't absorb all that she pees at night...another reason she needs to decide to move to a big girl bed and make this change...)  and she got a huge rash - first ever!

We're doing disposables for the first 2 weeks or so, enough to get out of meconium and into a rhythm of being 'mommy' for the first time.

Mess factor... you're going to have to change them anyway.  Cloth babies usually potty train faster and some moms swear cloth holds in the poop explosions better.  And if you're breastfeeding the poop isn't supposed to 'stink' like formula poops.

i went with prefolds for the newborn size along with some infant fitteds to see if they are worth the extra money.
also got some all in ones in the small size for daycare to make their lives easier (and more willing to accomodate my request)

I used cloth with my second.  I actually thought it was pretty easy.  If you are breastfeeding the first 6 months would be really easy for washing.  I do however plan on using disposables for the first 2 months or so.  The sleep deprieved state + two other kids, + 8 loads a laundry a week already will not mix well.  Once I am out of that overly tired stage I will get with it.  I used prefolds too (non-bleached indian premium prefolds) and thirsties covers.  I have about 10 all-in-ones and pockets that I use for naps/nighttime (with doublers).  It is a little overwhelming at first, but it really is easy.  Ebay also has some good deals especially for covers.

I'd like to use cloth diapers but I'm concerned about the smell and the mess o_O
I've never had to change diapers before so I'm not sure how I'll handle it. I'll probably give it a try if it's not too bad.

Well I wouldn't say I'm too cheap.  They are 4x8x4s and unbleached DSQ.  They just aren't GMDs.  The company that sells them actually only sells in bulk because they are a diaper service supplier.

Yep.  Got mine from Amazon (yeah, I'm cheap).  It was a package deal with 36 infant prefolds, 24 premium prefolds, 4 small and 4 medium bummis super whisper wraps.  Then just to be safe I ordered 2 size one thirsties duo wraps and 2 bumgenius.
