caffeine question

Is it ok to have a Regular coke every once in a great while? I had cut out all caffeine, and had not had one drop of it in 7-8 weeks and seen a frozen coke machine and i could not help myself.
I know its not good to over induldge in caffeine and is best to not drink any at all...but if i have a lapse every once in a great while is that going to hurt the babies?

thanks :) i spoke to my specialist, and she told me to have half a cup of coke to get rid of the migraines. Id prefer to have half a glass of cola opposed to taking tylenol.
It did make my horrid migraine go away instantly...mustve been caffeine withdrawl...which is odd because i went the 1st 8 weeks with 0 caffeine and it didnt bother me until then.
And before i was pregnant i cut out caffeine to one caffeinated beverage a day sometimes id have none. Dont drink coffee...weird.
Its a relief to know that a small amount of coke will help with the migraines and not hurt my babies :)

personally id rather not risk it as no one seems to have come up with reliable results. i found that fizzy drinks gave me heartburn and i know that artifical sweeteners are really bad for the baby so id say that if your serious about yours and the baby's health then why risk anything just so you have have a bit of pleasure for ten mins?

"There have been many studies on caffeine consumption and miscarriage, but the results have been conflicting. For example, two studies came out in January 2008.

*One found that women who consume 200 mg or more of caffeine daily are twice as likely to have a miscarriage as women who consume no caffeine (25 percent vs. 12.5 percent).
*The other found no increased risk among women who drank modest amounts of coffee daily (between about 200 mg/day and 350 mg/day).

Earlier studies found that only women who consume large amounts of caffeine (500 mg a day or more) are more likely to miscarry. Until more is known about the risks of caffeine consumption in pregnancy, the March of Dimes recommends a cautious approach: Pregnant women should limit caffeine consumption to less than 200 mg a day."

Using the 200 mg model you could have about 16 oz of 'weak' coffee or 8 oz of 'strong' coffee.  Coca Cola has a whole lot less caffeine and you could (theoretically) get away with drinking 60 oz a day while still staying under the 200 mg.  You could also drink 156 oz of Arizona Green Tea (4.6 liters or more than a gallon) and stay under the 200 mg!

As far as I've heard green tea has the lowest caffeine content (in common drinks).

Generic Coffee: 102-200 mg per 8 oz
Coffee, generic decaffeinated: 3-12 mg per 8 oz.

Pepsi:  38mg per 12 oz
Coca-Cola Classic: 38 mg per 12 oz
Tea, Brewed: 40-120 mg per 8 oz
Arizona Iced Tea, green: 15 mg per 16 oz

Hersheys Special Dark Chocolate Bar: 31 mg per 1.45 oz
Hersheys Chocolate Bar: 9 mg per 1.55 oz
Hersheys Kisses: about 1 mg per 'kiss'

p.s
decaf only has 2/3 of the caffeine removed so it still contains caffeine!
tea has nearly half the amount of coffee too

as this is my 1st pregnancy and my mom lives far away, im having to read up on everything myself and learn as i go along. i am a great tea lover and wanted to know what effects caffeine has on the baby. you need to realisee that your baby is so tiny and so one cup of coffee in the morning to wake us up, is a huge cup for bump and it stays in their system for a lot longer than it does ours. caffeine makes your blood pressue go up which is why its advised not to have any in your 1st Trimester as it can cause a MC. after learning all this ive decided my baby's health is way more important than how a nice cup of tea at the end of the day, makes me feel and im happy with a healthy baby than a brew anyway :)

I love coffee. I have one regular cup in the morning but have changed to decaf through the day. I am not sure if this is any better or not?

I think it's a cup of coffee a day.  I am can't remember how much mg caffeine a day.  I used to drink coffee everyday and I just cut it out.  I save my caffeine intake for some chocolate here and there!  ;)

I was planning on cutting down heavily but started getting wicked withdrawal headaches so I had to quit completely.  My bigger concern was about cramps/contractions.  I couldn't have caffeine at all during my period or I'll be crying in pain from the cramps!

My dr has told me both times so far that I can have up to two cups of coffee a day and it is ok. I think it is something like up to 300 mg of caffeine is ok, but don't quote me on that. My memory is a bit shot right now.. ^_^
