Accuracy of home fetal dopplers?

The doc says according to my last cycle that I am 6wks and 5 days. My and my hubby purchased a home fetal doppler (not expensive as the rest) and knew according to the doppler that the fetal heart rate probably couldnt be heard until 10-12 wks but we tried anyway. I heard a heart rate (so did my hubby and sister-in-law) and I put it as maybe being the artery they talk about but moving the doppler we found a definite HR of 126 bpm and I know that isnt mine. Could I be hearing it already or be further along?

I bought one off of e-bay that cost me $88.00 cdn (that included shipping) it came with the gel as well. It was a hand held dopplar with the speaker so everyone can hear just like the doctor's and i heard the heartbeat at 9.5 weeks with it. It was worth the extra money in my opinion, and sound of mind!

I have one and it's an Angelsounds monitor. It's definitely not the best quality but it only costs about $20-$30. It says that you can hear the heartbeat at 12 weeks and up. So I am hoping to hear it soon!! It's cool though because it has 2 sets of headphones so you and daddy can listen at the same time. And it has a recording line so you can record the heartbeat to a CD or cassette.

Mine was from a website as well and according to it..it says you can hear the HB as early as 7wks. I took my doppler with me to the doc appt to be sure and we can definitely pick up the HB. It is because where the baby is located but the doc told me to be careful using a home doppler because there is such a thing as overuse and potential risks. I got extremely lucky hearing mine so early but doc said not to worry if I tried and couldnt find the HB cuz he said they dont stick in one place and tend to hide. He worries that home dopplers can cause undo worry because one day we may find a HB and next not and thinks it will cause panic. I took all his advice in and understand what he is saying but I am still glad that it was confirmed and the baby is fine atm  =)

I got one from babybeat, they had a website at one time  (it is a hospital grade and you could rent or buy them for $30 a month, bought mine, my doctor loved mine and would use it over theirs lol)and heard it with my first son at 10 weeks and with my second son at 8w5d.but I had to put the doppler right at the top of the pubic bone and more to the center. If you get too far left or right you hear your own heartbeat.

I have a tilted uterus. I think I may buy a Doppler too. Any brand recommendations?

I read the package last night and it says that you wont be able to detect a HB until week 12 :(  Your monitor must be super sensitive! I have heard the HB several times now at the OB office but I just thought it would be cool to hear it in the comfort of my own home. I will let you know when I get lucky enough to hear it on my own. Good luck to you and your neice! I'm praying for healthy pregnancies all around :)

Went to the doc yesterday because my family doc did u/s early on and they saw nothing in utero so I had to go have another u/s to confirm. The baby is in the uterus and the HB was 125 BPM. My OB said that they did the u/s too early in pregnancy and a normal one (non-vaginal) at that and is why it was misdiagnosed. He also said I am not as far along as originally thought. Instead of being 7wks I am 6wks and 1day. I asked about the HB and he said it was extremely possible to hear the baby HB with a home doppler but I was indeed lucky and most of it has to do with where the baby is located. He told me that monitoring the baby HB at home was fine but to limit the usage because like all u/s and doppler devices it has certain output that could be harmful if overused.

lil_lady25 - my uterus is also tilted to the left and it is on the left side that I am hearing the HB and it is also why the doc thinks I am hearing an echo of a HB in another area. He said it just depends on where the baby is attached or located on when you can hear the HB at home. We are doing another u/s in 2 wks to confirm that it is indeed just the one in there. I cant wait for you to hear yours cuz it is very exciting!! As far as me and my niece, it is bringing us closer. She is 18 and, bless her heart, her mother is a drug addict and for reasons of her own she believes it is her job to care for her mother so during the pregnancy so far, she is coming to me cuz she doesnt know who else to ask questions or what steps she should be taking (like getting on WIC cuz the poor dear is super skinny). I am praying for her to carry and deliver a healthy baby.

I agree that it might take a bit longer to hear their heartbeats. My uterus is tilted so I have no idea where the babies would even be. I am going to keep trying for the next few weeks though. The monitor is also nothing special, picked it up for $20 and probably isnt the best quiality. That's cute that you and your neice are both expecting. I bet this brings you two closer. I dont have any friends or family that are early in pregnancy like me so it can sometimes feel lonely. Most of them have already had children by now. When is your due date?

Twins...wow! Congratulations! According to what I am told a home fetal monitor picks up at 7-12 weeks depending on doppler but every person is different. My niece is pregnant as well and is a week further along than me (yes we are very close together in this pregnancy!!!) and we cant find the hearbeat for her yet either even though she is very tiny. Doctor says it has lots to do with position of the baby in the uterus along with other factors so I wouldnt worry much because before long you will be listening to the babys' heart beat all the time.

You definitely may have gotten lucky to hear the HB this early! I also have a fetal monitor and I havent picked up a heartbeat yet for either twin and I am 10 weeks along today. I see the HB every week at my OB but the u/s is usually transvaginal. I hope I can hear it in the next few weeks! Good luck to you and congrats!

Thanks and I am sure luck was all on my side. Doing another in a few days to see if I still hear it or any changes to make sure. My cousin thinks I am further along but we will know for sure on my OB visit Aug 3rd. I cant wait!!

That is super cool!!!!  I'd say you are probably just damn lucky to get to hear it early :D but I don't know much about them other than 10-12wks you can usually hear.
