Can I get my hair dyed?

by yelloweskimo, Sep 23, 2008 12:51AM
Hi Everyone,
I have heard some conflicting things about getting your hair dyed during pregnancy. I have heard it is OK after the first trimester, and I have heard that it is not OK at anytime. Which is true? I have an appointment this friday (oh my hair really needs to be done!!), and would just like to be sure if it is safe before I go. Thanks everyone.

I got my hair highlighted right after we found out I was pg.  I haven't had it done since and I am 25 weeks now so it's looking really bad!  I dyed mine several times when I was carrying my first and everything was fine.  Most of the stuff I read said your hair might react differently than normal but it shouldn't hurt the baby.  I am going to have to get mine done again before I deliver this boy...hopefully since I had it done right at the beginning and it turned out fine, it will this time too!

Good Luck!

Yes my Dr told me not to color in first tri. After that its okie . I have colored my hair several times since my first tri... although I try to stick to non ammonia colors. It is recommended though not a hard and fast rule.

It is TOTALLY fine! =)

Just dont be shocked if the color comes out a little "off" due to your hormones! =)

Good luck!

My OB said that dying hair is fine, but he would rather I highlighted instead. Since most all over dyes tend to seep through the skin and get into the blood whereas highlights usually don't go on the scalp but rather sections of hair. Either way, I need to get mine redone too. Just scared to.

there is this one lady that said that she used to get her hair dyed every two months, and her daughter is now 6 years old and has asthma, and the doctor told her that it is from the dye, but she didnt listen because her sister was pregnant and dye her hair and nothing happened, so when she got pregnant with her son, she dyed her hair every two months, and now he has asthma, finally with her last daughter she didnt dye her hair through out her pregnancy and her daughter is healthy....

my point is that every one is different, it might be ok for someone but harmful for another, so I think that you should ask your doctor.

Thanks everyone. I actually do only get highlights so it doesn't touch my scalp. It is just looking awful at the moment!! I might check it out with my doctor first, but generally have heard that it is OK. I probably won't get it done again until after the birth (I've lasted 5 months now so whats another 4!).
