why do doctors go off your last period for how far you are instead of your conception date??
my last period was April 24-27 but my conception date was May 8th, I'm 14 weeks right now from May 8th but if I was going off my last period id be 16. but my due date is January 29, just curious it's all confusing to me!

They go by the average woman's ovulation (which is 14 days after the first day of your period). You're already considered those 2 weeks pregnant, even though your egg was just fertilized because your period has done 2 weeks of work in preparation for conception. So if you're last period began on Dec. 23rd, you count that as your first week pregnant. Get it?

However, there's a chance this is unreliable...which is the soul purpose of your 5 month ultrasound. Not so much to determine the gender of your baby but also to see how big your baby is measuring...which could change your due date. According to your due date, you could be 20 weeks but the baby could measure 17 weeks. It's more common with women who have irregular periods.

I didnt understand it either, and because I got pregnant right after I started dating my fiancee,  he kinda had a few questions for me. Period was March 28 and conception was around April 10/11. My doctors appointment was at 18 weeks and by palpation my dr said I measured 10-12 weeks. At the ultrasound at 19wks+3 the tech said I was right and I was 19 weeks with a healthy 9oz baby boy.

Newhubbynewbaby- wouldn't you know by now if you were carrying twins if your that far along? Also it's hard to depict when your true conception day was so going by your last period because we as women know that more than guessing our conception day is more accurate. It's never certain but it's a "round about" answer for a due date. Also they measure the size of the fetus during the vaginal ultrasound to determine how far along you are so with all that info they try and give the best and most accurate due date possible. Hope this helps

I think it's because going off your last period is a more reliable date since most of us know for sure our last period and sometimes not the conception date of our baby. This is how the 40 weeks are counted.
Sometimes, your date may be changed based on the growth of ur baby. My baby measured a week smaller (even though I know for sure my last period) so my due date may be changed to a week after.

Idk the hospital told me I was 8 weeks- so two weeks later I had a dr apt and they said I was only 6 weeks when I came in... Which means I was 4weeks at hospital not 8?
