I have a question about sonograms.

For those of you who already had their first prenatal appt...you had an ultrasound right? When did your doc tell you that you could get another one? Mine told me that the next one I would get would be at 20 weeks. Is that standard? I didnt really think anything about it until later when I left. I was thinking 20 weeks is a long time! The one that I got was at 6 weeks and I would think that they would have scheduled another at like 12 or 13 weeks. Maybe im wrong. But I think im going to die waiting until 20 weeks. The thing that Im scared about is I had a previous miscarriage at 7 weeks and so this time they have me on progesterone suppositories to help maintain pregnancy and i am considered a high risk pregnancy. From my first appt they couldnt see anything furing the ultrasound but the doc was acting concerned about my previous miscarriage and then all the sudden after my sec sonogram when they saw the heart beat, he just seemed so relaxed like it was smooth sailing from here. LOL. I know Im paranoid. Im ready to quit worrying about having a miscarriage, BUT then comes the worry of...Im actually going to have a baby!? Lol I dont think any of this has really set in yet. Im 7 weeks 5 days.

For those of us that are AMA (Advanced Maternal Age - 35 or older at delivery date), we get an ultrasound and detailed appt. at 12 weeks to determine abnormalities.  Aside from that, you can ask for an u/s at 10 weeks just to keep your mind at ease.  Mental health is just as important!

I know that I had one at 5 weeks, and then I"m getting another one on 12/9, and then another one on 12/31. after that i'll wait until my 20 wks. They are keeping track b/c of me having a m/c they want to make sure everything is going okay. I can say that I am still nervous about m/c but everything feels like its going normal.

Hey there is your dr easy going. I know if I asked my dr he would do it but he has delivered two of my kids and has been my dr for 8 yrs. I honestly would let it go unless like we have said you have a high risk pg. I would just relax and enjoy being pg and having a healthy pg and baby! I know it's easier said than done  Good luck.

So then maybe I should call and tell them I want an u/s on my next appt on Dec 17th? I'll be 10 weeks by then. Or should I just let it go and wait until FEBRUARY!

I'm in the same boat as you are. I was so surprised that my dr. wanted to hold off on ultrasounds and prenatal visits when i'm considered high risk. However, after stressing for 3 weeks, i finally called my nurse, and expressed my feelings. She moved up my ultrasound appointment, and got me into my doctor to give me reassurance. Sometimes all it takes is a phone call to let them know your concern. Don't be afraid. In the end, you are paying them to take care of you and your baby. And that's what they are there for.

Good luck sweetie!

20 wks is normal however if your high risk that's different. I'm high risk and I lost count of how many u/s i had with my first. I have a whole photo album of u/s pictures.

Yes. The only reason I'm having more than normal is my history of m/c and complications during my past pgs. I will have about 4-6 the normal amount is 2. Is this your first pg? At about 13-16 weeks you will have a alpha pheta protein test if that comes back pos you will have a u/s. If in the meantime you have any physical problems you would have one but I hope you only have one at 20 weeks that means you are having a normal pg. I hope this helped alittle bit. How are you feeling?

I think it really depends on the Dr. With my son I didn't have one until 20 weeks not even one to make sure the baby was there. This time I am going in for another in a week just because the baby measured really small and he wants to make sure that it is growing.
Try not to worry, it is a good sign that he doesn't feel the need to do another one. That means your baby looks really healthy.
