Maternity leave

So, I know we are all only about 5 months along but I am bored and was wondering when all of you are planning on taking your maternity leave. My employer doesn't offer leave but he did tell me that he will lay me off when I am ready so that I can collect unemployment.
As some of you may know, I waitress which is a VERY physically stressful job and lately I have been feeling like I really cant do it much longer. When I was pregnant with Noah I went into labor while packing my desk up so I am not being a wimp, it is just a completely different job now.
By the time I am done with a shift I get BH contractions and I feel like I can't walk another step. I will be talking to my doctor about it but I am thinking of working no more than 7 months.
Do any of you have jobs where you are on your feet, lifting and running around? How long do you plan on working?
Do you think 7 months is too soon for me to call it quits?

I agree with AP, go with your gut.  If work is starting to get difficult or could potentially cause problems with your pregnancy, I would stop as soon as reasonably possible.  On the other hand, if you feel fine, keep working and save that time off for the baby!!

No. When I was having my first I was cutting hair and had to stop a month before he was born. I couldn't stand up I was so huge. My feel were so swollen I couldn't get my shoes on. You don't want to cause yourself to go into pre-mature labor. Go with your gut.

Rose - I am currently not working at all right now, so i feel ya on the boredom.  Luckily my short term disability got approved (just found out today, YAY!!) so I'm not bored AND screwed.

If these headaches clear up soon, then I will go back to work in an office, and work as long as I can---I intend to up til delivery.  I get 8 weeks paid maternity but can take another 4 unpaid if i want or need to.

It's the balance you have to worry about.  Its not lazy to go on leave early if it's impacting your health.  If your feet are swelling and you're exhausted, then chances are you're at least restricting blood flow to the baby (think oxygen consumption---if you're out of breath, then your body is using up oxygen, and your baby isn't getting the optimal amount).  So don't feel bad at all.  If you work too long, you're liable to end up on bedrest---and that's like a prison sentence!!

Sounds like your employer is being very flexible - I am a dental hygienist so I sit all day and move around in between patients - my back has not started to bother me yet -but i am thinking it might start soon (trying to lean over to see in peoples' mouths) my stomach already touches my patients heads at times... I am hoping to work right up to my due date but I know this is unrealistic I am due July 27- probably around July 1, I am going to have to cut back my hours, my employer is giving me whatever I want as far as leave time (I love him!) but financially I have to go back to work asap : (

I am lucky to have always had very easy pregnancies (knock on wood)))).  WIth my first, I was a full-time college student and worked as a waitress up til the day before I gave birth.  With my second, I was off for the summer (I am a teacher), but went back to work (as a waitress) 13 days after he was born.
With my 3rd, I took the standard 6 weeks my employer offers.

This time, I am due August 2nd, but I am hoping to teach summer school to make some extra $$.  Summer school ends 9 nine days before my due date; think that's cutting it too close? LOL
After that, I will have all of August plus about 8 weeks into the school year off, more than I've ever had.  Can't wait!!  (Although, as you can probably tell, I love working and would go crazy staying at home for too long!)

I work in an office, but its on the 3rd floor and there is no elevator. I'm 19 wks and sometimes walking upstairs gets me out of breath.
My boss lady wants me to work until the very last minute. I know I'm having a c-section so I know it will be a planned day.
With my son, I got so big like I couldn't fit behind the steering wheel in my vehicle after 8 months. I had him in July but I was so swollen it was awful.
So i'm hoping maybe around my 36 wks mark i'll stop work. but it will depend on how I feel and my boss

Ok, so I dont feel completely lazy for thinking 7 months. My employer also said that I could work a couple shifts a week after he lays me off and just get payed under the table (if I feel up to it). I know I will have a job when I come back, I have been there for 6 years and they can always use more servers.
One other reason I am thinking 7 months is because I got horribly swollen with Noah, to the point where all my feet would fit in were flip flops (it was the middle of winter) it is against health codes to serve food in flip flops not to mention very unsafe for a preggo women.

My employer doesn't offer maternity leave either but he is allowing me to miss up to at least 2-3 months after I have the baby to look for someone else to take my place. I wonder if he would count the month before I have him? Well if he does end up needing to find someone else I will ask if he can lay me off so I can get unemployment until I find another job.

I also have a job where I am lifting kids all day and carrying equipment and on my feet all day. I have been wondering the same thing about how long I will be able to continue working there. I was thinking at the beginning I would go through the whole pregnancy now I am not so sure. Maybe around 8 months or sooner depending on if I am having problems other then backaches, and tired to the point of exhaustion.

I work at a grocery store, AFTER working at community bank, so I'm on my feet ALL day - and by the end of my shifts my belly feels sooo tensed up, and sore and my back friggen KILLS I probably won't work too long after 7 1/2, 8 months.
