Cramping and abdominal tightness but mostly at night, 37 weeks today!

I am 37 weeks today... now that I am 37 weeks I'm getting so anxious! This is my first and although I have been reading everything I can to know whats going on I am now to the point where reading isnt really enough to explain what I am feeling.

For about 3 weeks now I have been feeling tightness and cramping in my lower abdomen but its really only been at night when I am in bed. Of course I do get the occasional tightness during the day but its not really painful... at night when I am getting back into bed from the once an hour visit to the bathroom or even just turning over to my other side thats when I get the painful tightness. I would say it might be because I am straining a bit to get comfortable... I just dont know. This feeling can last anywhere from 10 seconds to maybe around a minute, maybe a little less. Sometimes it happens a couple times in a row  even if I havent moved since the last time it happened (3 to 5 minutes, maybe more, apart). I'm not sure if its normal to feel like that or what it means... like I said this is my first and all these feelings are new to me. I'm just not quite sure what exactly I am feeling.

Also yesterday started something different as well... I noticed that I was feeling a shooting pain, the pain was lower then the cramping/tightness that I have been feeling, for lack of a better term... in my vag. This shooting pain was intense it happened when I was walking around getting ready for bed, the pain shot so quickly and painfully that I had to sit down. Last night was the first and only time I have felt this and it went of for a good ten minutes (not in any kind of pattern)... so maybe its nothing but I guess its better to be safe and ask what you ladies may think then to just sit here and wonder when others may be feeling the same way.

It could be Braxton Hicks and your body is just getting ready for the upcoming birth.  It could also be the strain from being on your feet and all the extra weight that is happening at this stage of pregnancy.  Good luck and I hope you have a safe and healthy delivery when that time comes.

I have my next appointment tomorrow afternoon... I'm hoping that the doc does a check because it would be really nice to know whats going on even if nothings going on at all.

I also have the shooting pain you are referring to.  I asked my midwive about it, and she thinks it's the weight of my uterus on some nerves.  Not sure. :( As for your other symptoms, it sounds like your body is just getting ready for delivery.  Have you had a cervical check to check for progress?
