Is Leg Swelling Really Normal in Pregnancy??!!?? Yet another worry with this one!

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has had leg swelling as early as 20 weeks. I'm 22 weeks now and i have had bad leg swelling for the last couple of weeks.  I went to the hospital and dr. and both said that my bp is perfect and there's no protein in my urine so it's nothing to worry about. Tell that to my poor legs that are swollen to double their size by the evening.  I tried drinking more water, limiting my salt and it's not helping. I'm really worried considering it's so early and i have so much more time to swell. I hate to think what it'll be like after 30 weeks.   I can actually press on my shins and leave finger dents which totally disgusts me.  The swelling is gone down in the morning but i can still leave those little impressions in my shins, even though my legs look no longer swollen. Baby is doing great...20 week ultrasound was perfect, i measuring a day ahead of my due date but other then that everything was good. I'm just curious if anyone else has had this or if i'm a lucky one who swells up like a blimp. At least that's what i feel like :(

did your legs turn red in spots?? I find my legs get really red in spots also along with the swelling..i'm sure it all has to do with circulation but it's literally a pain in the butt!

Yep I have the swelling too :( My dr said the same advice that 30something13 said. Drink more water, eat less salty foods and put my feet up as soon as I get home. Ive been doing that and it does totally help. I had this like this with my oldest DD but not my last one. Hate it!

I had swelling with my first pregnancy at 20 weeks like that.  Couldnt wear normal shoes, undid the laces in my sneakers, etc.  Unfortunately it lasted the entire rest of the pregnancy.  At some points you literally couldnt distinguish any sort of an ankle whatsoever.  I had to buy shoes a size 1/2 bigger than my normal ones.  The bad thing is that I now have ALOT of stretch marks on my legs from all of the water, the good news is that within about 3 days of delivering my son, most of it was all gone!   So you arent the only 'lucky' one :)

Thanks for answering..that actually makes alot of sense because the baby is kicking REALLY low this time which was something else i was wondering about.  I also have pain across my ribs which is probably also from carrying so low.

Well you have had abbies before so the thing is that the hormone relaxen has taken effect and also your baby will lay lower the more you have. So that means the baby laying lower and the muscles being fully relaxed are putting pressure on your lower blood vessals casuing the swelling. You might want to try support hose or before it gets bad in the evening keep your ffet up as much as possible to help. You have nothing to worry about as long as your blood pressure stays good. But your smart to eat less salt and drink more water to keep it down. Laying down on the couch with your feet up is better then just putting your feet up to as it takes the pressure off the blood vessels. I hope it helps ya! I have no other clue wht to do unless you can jion the YMCA or a pool club to get circulation to your lower half.
