we do have lactation consultants in Canada as well but the public health nurses do a lot of educating as well... they are the ones that do the immunizations so they also weigh and measure babies growth(at each immunization) and after baby is born they make a house call where they check in on mom and baby to make sure both are doing well... they also make sure that the babies are meeting the correct milestones like sitting up, talking, walking, ect at the approapriate times and if not they can refer you on to the approapriate specialists.... so if they felt that you needed more help for nursing they could refer you to a lactation consultant but they would most likely be able to help you just as well... at least the one i have seems to know her stuff :)
PS they are RNs

Ive never heard of a public health nurse. Is that similar to a lactation consultant?

Thanks for the reply :-) I had a public health nurse in to help me with positioning and such, but im still finding things so overwhelming. Im.going to continue trying for a fwe days. But I really think that I im going to end up  pumping some and supplementing the rest with formula.

Dont feel like a failure.. you did try it and sometimes it doesnt work for everyone. But you should try and get in touch with a lactation consultant in your area and they may be able to help you with your latching. If there is a WIC office where you live or close by I would try getting in touch with them. They are normally very willing to even come and meet you at your home so its a little more comfortable for you. They are very helpful and might even allow you to borrow a pump if you dont have one. Good luck to you though.

I feel like things going pretty good here.minus the breastfeeding. My boyfriend and I.are adjusting well to having Ethan here with us. Its a new experience, and its wonderful. Ethan is having difficulties latching and I have been using a shield, but I am finding breastfeeding  very overwhelming. I have been contemplating switching to formula, but I fear that I will regret that decision and feel like a failure :-(

I've been doing ok. That first week I was a little weepy here and there. It seemed like my toddler was at his worst and it scared me to be alone with him the next week. We've been doing ok though. It can be hectic at times but we are alive! lol
The worst will be when I have to take them somewhere by myself!! I'm scared for that point in time. Carrying a newborn and trying to hold onto a toddler's hand is difficult.

Have to be honest. I'm not doing so hot. I'm am such an emotional mess. Going through a lot of emotions with my older kids. Doesn't help that extended family seems to be falling apart. Worried and scared about my husband going back to work. I feel pretty depressed much of the time but then I have short bursts of joy so I don't think I have post partum depression. Just want to be the best mom for all my kids but scared I fail.
