Birth story

So it's a week late but here is my experience of my first every baby and labour in a UK hospital. At 6pm on 1 June my waters broke but I wasn't having any contractions at that point. I rang the hospital and was told to go in for a check up. When I arrived I was shoved into a small curtained bed where they took my blood pressure and strapped me to a baby heart/contraction monitor and decided my blood pressure was too high so I was told I would be monitored for another twenty mins. Whilst being monitored it was evident that I was getting light contractions which were close together but not strong. They did an internal exam and my cervix was closed. They decided I had to stay overnight so I was moved to a shared ward (it was probably about 9pm by time we got there) by now I was starving hungry as I hadn't had dinner before leaving home but I had managed to grab some breakfast bars and crisps so I ate some of those. The nurse said my husband couldn't stay but when I started crying she changed her mind! They didn't want to increase my
Blood pressure more so he stayed. At about 1am my contractions were stronger and my hubby went and got the midwife who said I was 3/4cm dilated. I was
Given gas and air and took it gladly but declined pefadine as I didn't want to take drugs. A hour or so later I was moved to the labor ward where I continued with my labor til about 6.30/7am when I started trying to push. By this point I was exhausted and had no gas left in the tank. No one had offered me any fluids or food and I was in too much pain to be able to speak more than one word at a time! The midwife told the doctor I was too tired to carry on pushing so the doctor examined me to see if I could have help with the vontuse cap but she said the baby was facing the wrong way (head down but face up or something) so I had to go to theatre to have forceps and a epidural. Well this was the most traumatic thing I have ever been through. The doctor was jabbing me in the spine like I was a pin cushion trying to do an epidural whilst I was contracting and telling the midwife I could feel baby's head coming out!!!! By time they laid me Down to start they saw the baby was coming out and he was now facing the right way for the cap to be used. One doctor said
"Oh what a shame we did the epidural" so they cut me, pulled three times on the cap and out he came. I was shaking violently from the epidural and I couldn't even hold my son for an hour after the birth and too add to it all he only had a apgar score of 6 and had to have more oxygen when he came out. Thank god he was all right after that I was able to hug him after we both recovered a bit. I was so upset that they did the epidural because it took ages for me to recover my
Mobility and I had to stay in hospital. I couldn't even pee as even when my legs came back in feeling my bum and bits were still numb. I was discharged the following night after being shown very little about caring for baby (I.e how to top and tail or breastfeed etc) and was told midwife would visit at home the next day. As you can probably tell I was a bit traumatised by it all and really struggled in first few days to keep my emotions in control. I even felt like the LO's dad was doing a better job than me. I'm ok now thank god and just healing

Congrats, doesnt sound like. Great experience though. I cant believe how they treated the fact he was facing the opposite way, my first son was the same, they are supposed to be face to back but my son was back to back, i gave birth in a birth pool, absolutely fine, they told me it would hurt more to push and maybe take longer but he came out nice and easy, just with a slightly elongated head haha. Im also from the UK. But again congrats on your baby hun :)
