Tummy Time

Okay I know we have discussed this already, but I wanted to check in and see how tummy time was going for everyone.  Is your child starting to like it?  If not, do you still try to get some tummy time in each day?  What are you ahvingt LO do during tummy time?

Mady is not a huge fan of tummy time, we usually can get a few minutes in, then she loses it. I feel like she is not going to roll over and get all the neck muscles on time if I don't do it, but when she freaks i hate to leave her there.

Any advice?

hayden is not a fan of tummy time - so I do not do it religiously - but I did find if I stick a soft ball under her chest - and "prop her up" I can get more time out of her.

I cheat. I put colorful stuff on the side of the changing table to encourage her to roll to her side. I do things where she is belly down on me - not on a hard surface like they recommend.

**** - she just started crying for some reason - more later!

Jack hates tummy time. I try it once a day but only for a few minutes. I can't stand his screaming. If he didn't already cry all day I might leave him on his tummy a little while longer each day but any additional crying right now is extremely draining. This is probably why he hasn't really consistently rolled over yet. When he is on his tummy he lifts his arms, head and legs (it looks like he is flying) for a short time then starts screaming....hopefully the frustration won't last much longer and he will really start to enjoy tummy time soon. ;)

Thanks Ladies.  Glad to hear she's not the only one.  I know she will do it in her own time.  I just wasn't sure if everyone just pushed through the crying!!

Noah does not like his tummy time at all.... We do it every day but most the time its for only a couple of minutes because he gets sooo upset! I think i will try the toys or tv! Maybe that will help keep his mind off of it!

Blake does tummy time everyday for at least 10 minutes. She has since the first week we brought her home. She doesn't like her tummy time too much but she will roll over when she gets really sick of it. But before she was rolling over she would just be ticked off.

Here is what I did..

I would lay a blanket down on the floor (or use her play mat) and put her on her belly. I would put some of her rattles or toys around her where she could see them and I would turn on the tv. Sometimes she would reach for her toys or roll to her side to see the tv. That helped her focus on something other than her misery of being on her tummy. It also enticed her to slowly roll to her side...like to get the toy or to watch the tv. Then she would be on her side and sometimes she would just roll over when she got fussy.

Honestly it just takes time...it will happen.

Leighton still doesn't think tummy time is fun, but we also do it everyday (but we just started doing it everyday maybe 2 weeks ago because it was such a stressful activity that we both hated doing it).  Actually... she has just recently started to lift herself up and look around which she couldn't or wouldn't do just a week ago.  It's like something connected this week with her.  And, Leighton is almost 14 weeks old... and I know Mady is a few weeks younger and things change soooo quickly with them.  So, don't worry if she hates it.  Like WhitneyLauren said... there are other things that can help then with their neck muscles.

One thing Leighton actually likes to do:  If you have a Boppie (that nursing pillow thing) I put it on the floor and then have her lay down with her arms and upper body propped up on it.  I then lay down nect to her.  I read a book to her while she is like that and she has to use her neck muscles to keep her head up.  That is something you could do as an alternative that might not stress her out.

Mark gets tummy time every day, but he still hates it. He really enjoys sitting in the bumbo seat, though, which helps strengthen his core.

Also let me share something with you that I learned with my first. Evert child is different. Some take longer to do things than others, and that does not make them less intelligent. When you baby is 10 no one is going to care when she walked or crawled or rolled over. I finally had to learn that I couldn't force my son to do anything- that he would do it in his own time so I might as well not get so frustrated! ;) So don't worry... she will for sure roll over!
