i was told they drink 1 oz for every hr of sleep..lol..idk my son is a heffer..lol he drinks between 4-6 oz every 4 hrs os so
I asked the doctor what is normal because Isabelle doesn't really have a schedule and the doctor said it's normal for a 6 week old to be eating 2 to 4 oz every 2 to 4 hours. She's right in the middle with that. At night sometimes she'll go a little more if we're really really really lucky. Total feeding time takes about 45 minutes because she needs to be burped a lot from swallowing air anywhere she can get it so we burp after each oz.
Hey Jem...
Leighton at 6 weeks was still trying to feed every 2 hours. So, I really worked on trying to stretch her feedings out to more of the 2 1/2 hr. mark. She fussed and wasn't happy about it, but I just couldn't handle being on that tight of a schedule. (I know that sounds selfish... but its true!) Then, I stretched it to 3 hours. Stretching it to 3 hours was much easier for her than that initial stretch to 2 1/2 hrs. So, she is now on a 3 hour schedule. I would do everything in my power to keep her content during those few days that it took to get her to 3 hours. Rattle, pacifier, walking, dancing, singing, you name it.
Not going to lie, it was a struggle to get her to eat every 3 hours. It took about 4 days, but now there is no fussing or crying. She is confident that I will feed her on that 3 hour mark.
About eating for a shorter amount of time. I would say at about 6 weeks Leighton starting eating for shorter periods. It freaked me out because I thought... "Oh my gosh! I must not be producing anymore!" So, I tried giving her a bottle with formula and she wouldn't take it after her feeding. That was my reassurance that I WAS producing enough. I don't know why they eat for a shorter period now. They are hard to figure out, aren't they?! ;)
