Doctors Appointment & Question

by foo803, Oct 31, 2008 09:20AM
I went to the doctors (I actually see midwives)  yesterday for a routine visit and everything was good that they could tell. I am 13 weeks 4 days, and we were able to hear the heartbeat using a doppler. I now get to relax a little bit before I start worrying until I hear it again at my next visit.

Anyway, my question is how many of you have been tested for vitamin d levels during your pregnancy? I haven't but I know some doctors are starting to include it with the blood work they do at the first visit. I have been doing a lot of research on this topic and am finding out how important it is for everyone but especially pregnant and lactating women. There is a good case article on vitamin d and pregnancy (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/79/5/717) that talks about how much we should really be taking to keep up with our bodies demand and maintain a healthy and normal vitamin d level. It is a long article but if you scroll to the parts just on pregnancy it is interesting to see how much vitamin d we really should be taking. WebMD also has a short article on how it is important for growing strong healthy bones in the babies (http://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20060106/pregnant-vitamin-d-aids-babys-bones)  I encourage everyone to look into this to help keep our bodies healthy and also in developing healthy babies.

If you are taking a good pregnancy vitamin then you should be fine as these do include vitamin D.

i live in the RAINY pacific nw and have been told that my whole famiy should be taking 2000 IU of vitamin D daily. If you live in a sunny climate you probably get enough vitamin D from the sun.
