During the 2nd trimester I was dilated 1cm on the outside only. I stayed that way until the 3rd trimester.

Dialated refers to how open your cervix is, so you cant be 3 cm dialated, but closed? Maybe you misunderstood your doctor. They check 3 things when checking your cervix- dialation (how open it is), effacement (how thin it is), & softness of your cervix. Maybe your 3cm but its still pretty hard? Or maybe your not effaced at all?  Either way dont feel discouraged, things can change so quickly. One of my friends is an L&D nurse and she had a patient who came in and was closed, after her appt she came back in a few hours later and was 4cm dialated and had her baby just a cpl hours after that. Everyone progresses differently :)
