Shortening Cervix at 15 weeks

I measured 7cm about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I went in for my 15 week checkup yesterday and measured 3.5cm. My doctor put me on progesterone cream and has me coming back next week to re-measure. She said 3.5cm normally wouldn't have been concerning had we not had the 7cm measurement previously.  Has anyone had similar issues? They closed before I could call back and really get more info (she called after I had left.) Of course it's the weekend so I'm trying not to stress too much about it while I wait until Monday.

My mum had that, they realised she had it because she went into labour at 24 weeks with two babies, both premature. After that they put stitches in to keep us in there x

First time mom here, why are they measuring you so early on in your pregnancy? I'm 16 weeks and haven't had anything but an ultrasound done and been weighed by my doctor
