My husbands a smoker and he goes outside and doesn't smoke in the house and doesn't smoke around me.   He does try to light up in the house but I don't think the cigarette is going by that point.   I don't think it's an issue if you smoke outside and then come back in.

One thing he does do is smoke in the car with the window down.  He seems to think it's okay.   And he does continue to do it...even if I am in the car.   I complain about it and he stops.

I really don't think it's that big of a deal if you aren't smoking around her and doing it outside.  Maybe wash your hands afterwards so as to remove chemicals.   I doubt this will really affect the baby.   Have her check with her OB doc and maybe you could try to quit now.....there's a prescription for Chantix that is suppose to be really good.  MY friend is a smoker and her OB doctor wrote out a prescription for her.

Actually there has been a lot of info in the media lately about this kind of residual smoke.  It's called 3rd hand smoke and refers to the toxic chemicals that remain in your clothes, hair, car, furniture etc.  So even if you are not smoking directly in the same room, these residual chemicals are still putting the mother and baby at risk.  You can just google third hand smoke and read about it.  More importantly babies and small children are more at risk because their immune systems are less developed.

I think it is great that you are concerned.  Why not take it to the next step and try to quit?  In the long run it will be better for your wife, your baby and you.

Congrats and good luck!

I think NicMom is right in that I don't think the smoke on your clothes will hurt her because she won't be right up against you just inhaling it.  All of us on here have had a lot of nausea and I, myself, cannot tolerate the smell of smoke right now.  It will send me straight to the toilet to vomit.

Once the baby is born though, I would not hold the baby right after smoking and/or with the same clothes on that you have smoked in.  That can be harmful to a baby, which makes sense.  You can def smell the a smoker most times.  They carry it with them and I can only imagine how bad that must smell to a newborn.  They just can't tell you.  And I have been told by like 3 health professionals that the smoke on clothes is/can be harmful to babies.

Good luck with everything!!!

I agree with Latrice go to the dr appointment with her. They take time to make sure all your questions are answered in that first appointment. The folic acid and prenatals are very importat in the first few months of pregnancy.

I wouldn't worry about the residual smoke that lingers on your clothes after you come in. I don't think it's harmful, but I wouldn't be surprised if once her morning sickness kicks in she doesn't want to be anywhere around that smell.

Congrats

She needs to take a prenatal or muti vitamin (daily.)  She also needs to be eating lots of foods rich in folic acid, which helps prevent birth defects.  Orange juice, breakfast cereals, oatmeal, kiwi, berries, are all excellent sources of folic acid.  She probably needs to drink lots of water.  And milk (for calcium which is also very important.)

As Latrice mentioned above, the dr. will give you a list of things that are good, as well as foods she should AVOID.  (Certain types of fish, hot dogs, deli meats, unpasturized cheeses.)

Congratulations!  Wishing you both a happy and healthy 9 months!

As far as eating healthy, she should she an OB and they can give her a list of the things she needs to eat.

SECOND HAND SMOKE is just as bad as FIRST HAND, even though you may smoke outside, what most people who smoke dont realize is that there are still smoke particles in your clothes, hair etc. I dont smoke, and my fiance does, at the moment i sleep in the guest room bcuz the smell is awful, i can still smell it on him after he smokes, and when the baby comes, he will need to shower and change his clothes if he is going to hold the baby.

Everyone may have there different opinion but this is just mine, i dont need to fight the polution in the air and the smoke from my partner, its just to much.

you should go to her ob appt with her so you can ask the dr questions about if the smoking will affect her/baby, so that way, you both are hearing the facts from the dr.

Congrats, hope all is well.
