I never had a class or anything with my DD...but after she was there, my midwife did come by and answer any questions or give pointers if we had some issues in the first few days after DD was born.
I would definitely take the class. I successfully breastfed my first until I got pregnant with my second when my first was just going on a year old. I had meant to take a BF class at my hospital before my first was born but I kept putting it off then ended up on bed rest and never took the class. Breastfeeding at first was very very hard for me. But I never gave up. But the whole time I wished I had taken a class. I found a lot of support with the lactation consultants at the hospital and a BF support group. But still I wish I had taken the class. I highly suggest any first time mom who wants to BF take the class.
Hey Latrice,
If they offer a class, I say go for it. And as the others have said, there will be a lactation nurse to help you at the hospital. Plus, most hospitals have lactation nurses that you can call on staff 24 hours a day and free.
If you have any questions, I'd be glad to try to answer them. I have nursed all 5 of my kids and will nurse this one too, so if I can help, just let me know :)
For what it's worth maybe you can take the class closer to the time you deliver, then you won't forget as much.
I am hoping to breastfeed. I think a BF class would be great. I am going to certainly try. I know they have a lactation counselor in the hospital after you deliver. So I was hoping to get some training then....i"ve had two children before and never could seem to master it :(.
I might just see if they offer a class for BF at my hospital that I can take before I deliver.
I'm taking one at the class and I'm joining a support group in my town. I remember with my son the hospital had a special lactation consultant that came to my room to try and show me how to breastfeed a few hours after he was born. Your hospital will probably offer a little help after birth.
