I didn't see this post when it was put up a few days ago. Lily is now 2 weeks old. Her schedule is as follows:
500-530 am 2 1/2 ounces breastmilk
900-930 am 2 1/2 ounces breastmilk
12-1230 pm 2 1/2 ounces breastmilk
230-300pm 2 1/2 ounces breastmilk
430-500 pm 2 1/2 ounces breastmilk
700-730pm 2 1/2 ounces breastmilk or formula
930-1000 pm 2 1/2-3 ounces breastmilk of formula
100-130 am 2 1/2 ounces breastmilk or formula
Occasionally she'll cluster feed at random times during the day. So she's doing around 20-22 ounces per day.
I've given up on actually nursing, I'm just pumping and bottle feeding. It worked better for me with my last one and I think it will this time too. I have never been able to get a good latch with any of my kids and my nipples get extremely sore. Pumping hurts FAR less. I'm also trying to increase my supply and so far I've been able to go from mostly formula to mostly breastmilk...I'm working on getting to strictly breastmilk though.
I got the depo provera shot becuase my doctor said that sometimes it helps with milk supply, i'm also taking iron to get over my anemia which can inhibit milk production, plus I'm taking reglan and doing alfalfa and fenugreek. I'm also continuing my prenatal vitamins. The one thing I COULD do better at is drinking more water though.
Lily sleeps most of the time still but she has a periods once during the day and once during the evening where she stays awake and looks around for 10-15 minutes. She's really good about not fussing, she doesn't use a pacifier. She also has no problems sleeping in her bassinett unlike my other kids who wouldn't sleep unless they were laying on me. The past several days though she's been pretty congested in the sinuses so I've been having her sleep in her bouncer to keep her head elevated to help alleviate some of the stuffiness, plus using saline drops in her nose. The congestion is too far back to get with a nasal aspirator.
Finn is 2 and a half weeks now.
Breastfeeding has been a bit of a challenge. He had a really hard time latching correctly and would fall asleep at the breast after a few minutes - this meant that he was constantly feeding. I went to a lactation consultant and things have been improving but my nipples are still somewhat sore (not painful anymore but sore). Is anyone else experiencing this? I had to pump for a while to supplement and I also had to supplement with some formula (because he had lost too much weight). The pumping made me so sore, I could not wait to stop. I am no longer pumping now but need to return to it to get my right breast to increase its supply. I am going to experiment with some different breast shields to see if I can make it more comfortable. I have also started taking Fenugreek to boost my supply - it really helps.
He now eats every 2-3 hours with at least one 4-5 hour stretch. This is sometimes at night, which is heaven. However, he only makes it that long if he is sleeping on me - if he is in his swing or boppy, I can get an hour max and in his bassinet, I get 5 minutes if I am lucky. So needless to say, he spends a lot of time sleeping on me, but it makes it really hard to do anything else! Good thing he is so darn cute.
This is yesterday - today's schedule
breast fed at midnight
breast fed at 2 am
breastfed at 4 am
breast fed at 6 am
breast fed at 9:30am
breast fed at 11:45 am
breast fed at 2:00pm
breast fed at 5:00pm
breast fed at 7:30
breast fed at 8:30
breast fed at 9:30 (I think these 1 hour clusters happen because I am making less milk
in the evening)
dad gave him 2oz of a bottle supplement at 11pm because I was in the bath and he did
not want to bother me (very sweet but it upset me because there was really no need)
breast fed at 11:30
breast fed at 1:00am and then finally asleep
breat fed at 4:30 am
breast fed at 7am
breast fed at 10:30am
breast fed at 12:30pm
I have no idea how much he eats at each feeding but at the lactation consultant's on Monday, he ate 3 oz from both breasts. My right breast makes much less and is much more sore, so I alternate between giving him both breasts and then just the left. I am supposed to be pumping the right when I do that but I am waiting for new breast shields to come in first. Again, I really hate pumping on top of feeding - it is so time consuming and this is hard enough.
He is now having longer periods during the day when he is awake and alert - with his most alert time being from 10pm to 1am (he is a night owl like his mama). I mainly talk and sing to him, and we spend a lot of time dancing to music. I have also started reading to him and giving him some various visual and auditory stimulation - like shaking a rattle near him or showing him those black and white cards for babies. He will track the rattle with his head and eyes now, which is really neat. I am now able to walk better, so I try to get him out for a walk everyday as well. Healing from my tears took longer than I expected and I am still pretty sore.
jschoch: I would not worry about boring your baby at all - in those first 2 weeks babies sleep 90% of the time, and when awake, their senses are pretty limited. Holding her and talking and singing to her is all the interaction she needs.
About the breastfeeding - my guy fell asleep a lot at first as well. It has gotten much better now but the main reason he was falling asleep was because his latch was not perfect and he was not getting enough milk - when this happens babies get bored and disinterested at the breast and fall asleep faster. So if this continues, you may want to touch base with a lactation consultant.
For me, I'm breastfeeding and have no idea how much she eats. I know the one time I pumped I got 3oz, but that was when she was 7 days old and she wasn't eating that much.
5am-fed from both breasts
11am-fed from left breast once and right twice
1pm-2oz sensitive formula (no spit up!!)
3pm-fed from left breast
6pm-fed from both breasts
10pm-fed from right breast
11pm-2oz sensitive formula
1:30am-fed from both breasts
I'm wanting to pump to take her off of formula completely, but I can't get ahead yet. She eats too much for me to get anything out afterwards. I'll probably try again once her growth spurt is over. (and she nurses for a long time as well)
In terms of sleep, she does really well at night, but I think it's because she's in our bed with us a lot of the time. We typically get 3-4 hours of sleep at a time. During the day she sleeps around 2-4 hours. Usually it's around 2 and then she will want to eat again.
With Kylie, I sing to her, we play on the floor for tummy time (her ped said to try it since she is already supporting her head so well) and daddy walks her around the house and talks to her.
Emilee is 6 weeks old but a premie so she's very similiar to newborn babies right now....im also pumping and using formula for her...im starting to wean her off breastmilk completely because i cant keep up
230 am - 120 mL = 4 oz breast milk
530 am - 150 ml = 5 oz breast milk
12 pm - 60 mL = 2 oz formula
2 pm - 60 mL = 2 oz breast milk
7 pm - 90 mL = 3 oz formula
11 pm - 120 mL = 4 oz formula
she also has rice cereal added to her formula to help with her acid reflux
her total oz of breast milk was 11 oz and formula was 9 oz so total she ate 20 oz yesterday
she still sleeps a lot...she usually is up about every 4-5 hours for a feeding...it used to be every 2-3 hours which was a lot of adjusting and dealing with sleep deprevation
