Group B Strep

Good Afternoon All - I am currently 24 weeks, FTM. I had one of my biweekly appointments (I'm high risk) with my Dr on Monday and based on my response to some questions she asked, she tested me for Group B Strep. I just got the call that I have very high levels of it and I am going to be treated with antibiotics. I was tested at 12 weeks and that came back negative. But now I have it, *sigh*. My question is - have any of you experienced this? What can I expect in the future, especially with labor and delivery? I know this can be very serious if my baby boy gets it so now I'm very worried. Please help!

I had it.  I ended up going ovenr my due date and was induced.   When I went in to be induced, the nurse started an IV and gave me penicillin in my iv.  I was on the ice until after I gave birth.  It was about 18 hours.  All was normal and baby never came down with the infection.   I am hoping this go around I won't have it.

It is routine for doctors to test all women between 35-37 weeks for Group B strep because about 25% of of women have it. Your doc tested you early because you were high risk. You doc till treat you with antibiotics now and probably test you again later to keep an eye on it.

I tested positive during the 35th week screening at one of my regular prenatal visits. The doctor told me that meant I would have to have antibiotics on IV drip placed in my arm during labor and delivery which will minimize the risk of me passing it to baby. It worked an my baby is healthy.

I'm on my second pregnancy now and anticipate that I will test positive for it again and have to have the IV drip.

I don't think it's anything to really stress about. But if you are concerned, you can read up on it online jy just googling "group B strep pregnancy". Or just talk to your doctor. Hopefully she will give you information that will let you know what's going on and help put you at ease.
