eating placenta

Any moms choose to eat their placenta for past pregnancies? Or anyone planning on doing it this pregnancy? I'm considering it, but I want to hear as many stories as possible to help me make my decision.

I had never heard of the soap and shampoo idea. I'll look into that. May be a better option for me becaase I have a hard time swallowing pills.

BrookeP7373, I didn't't think you were being rude. This thread has definitely become educational and I'd rather those who are against or unsure of consuming their placenta read the thread than only those who already know they will do so.

Thanks so much for all the responses. It's nice to see so many are planning on doing this. When I discuss this at places like work, people just think I'm crazy so I wasn't sure how common it is to consume placenta.

I'm going to look up the prices for encapsulating. I've also heard of the placentabeing made into a smoothie (I'm gguessing after being cooked or freeze dried).

I thought it was cannibalism too. Hmmm....it's all very interesting that's for sure.

Rat's are definitely not convincing enough for me... Its cannibalism because the tissues of the placenta are formed from the embryo, i.e. its not the mothers tissue, therefore cannibalism.

I've never done it before, but I have a friend Who made a placenta shake and drank it after she gave birth. I was curious and went online to research if there is even such a thing and unbelievably there is. It's actually healthy and helps the mother recover from the pregnancy. Try Googling it..you'll be amazed of what it does to your body. It's actually good but I can't do it though. I have a very weak stomach.

I found this, I just googled it because I was curious might help you in your decision :)

The truth is there’s not much evidence to say whether the practice benefits humans. A few small studies have connected placenta-eating with increased breast-milk supply and pain relief (the latter only in rats). But no studies have looked at the possible risks, if any, of ingesting human tissue. In the case of some pregnancy conditions — preeclampsia, for example — the placenta may harbor stress proteins. No one really knows what effect, if any, these proteins have if you consume them. The bottom line: Overwhelmingly, mainstream medical experts believe that there’s just no proven reason to eat your afterbirth.

Health care providers don't do 100% of the time the things that make sense. They've been trained a certain way and often don't deviate from that.

All that to be said, I don't think the benefits have been totally proven but I've heard dozens of Mom's saying it helped them....so decide for yourself!

I've heard of women doing all sorts of things with their placentas.
Having it encapsulated into vitamin form is supposed to help with PPD. I actually read a really amazing article about that, the couple who wrote it were very happy with their decision.
I've heard of women having it made into soaps or shampoos and that being really good for your skin and hair.
And the cultural beliefs with it ate some of the most beautiful. Like what the woman from New Zealand said, planting it with a tree to grow with your child.
It's something where at first, I thought it was gross but after learning more about it, the benefits out weigh the yuck factor. Whatever a woman chooses to do with her placenta, is up to her and has it's own set of benefits.

I personally think that I is a fad that was cooked up by Hollywood... Just because animals do it is not enough reason for me to, they also eat their own feces and I would hope you wouldn't do that. If it were truly beneficial don't you think more health care providers would emphasize its importance?

Yeah the pill doesn't sound bad at all if it helps with all those things. I'll definitely look into the benefits. But your right.....eating it fried or raw is just way too much for me to handle....but the pill I think I could do. How much does doing that cost out of curiosity?

I have a friend that had hers freeze dried and encapsulated. Not as gross as frying it up for dinner sounds.

I honestly never really entertained the idea before, but I am now :) I will definitely do some research and choose whether we'd like to spend the extra money to have encapsulated. I know people who have cooked and eatin it....I have a weak stomach so that wouldn't work for me but I'm very curious as to what the cost and health benefits of encapsulation and taking it :) thanks for posting such an honest question

Both that is really interesting. So have they done studies that have found that it's proven to benefit those things? Like I said I've heard of people doing it but have never understood why. I always associated it with religion or something. I never knew they could do a pill. Honestly I've just heard of people frying it up and eating it with their family. It totally freaks me out haha.

@10angels...thank you. I honestly wasn't even meaning to be rude. I was simply curious but whatever. Lol lol

Its supposed to help with post birth symptoms as well as helping make milk, its been used for centuries. Western culture is a bunch of narrow minded prudes.

It contains your own natural hormones. It helps the uterus recover to prepregnancy state. It balances your system, replenished depleted iron. Gives you more energy. Increases milk production. Lessens bleeding postpartum. Helps prevent baby blues. Can help during menopause. I will definitely be getting mind encapsulated and take them just like you do a prenatal vitamin. :)

I wasn't being rude at all. I asked her why she would want to. I was legitimately curious but ok.
