6 weeks 4 days. slow heartrate and small baby

At 6 weeks I went to my regular ob/gyn to have an ultrasound done at 6 weeks. She told me all there was, was an empty gestational sac and at 7 weeks I would have to schedule a D/C.

I went for a second opinion yesterday and was sent to the hospitl for a high tech ultrsound and low and behold there was a heartbeat!!!

My new ob/gyn called me yesterday and said the heartbeat was slow at 90 bpm and the baby was small measuring 2mm. I was 6 weeks and 4 days yesterday by the way. She told me that the heartrate and size does call for some concern from her. Should I be worried about not having a healthy child?

your DR was wrong the first time and i think shes wrong again.

I just saw on the internet that a 2mm ebryo a normal heart rate is 75 bpm, and sometimes when the fetal pole is smaller than 4mm a heartbeat may not be detected.

think about this, on your first ultrasound 4 days ago, you didint see anything, and 4 days later you saw a fetalpole and heartbeat, i really think that your not 6 weeks 4 days, maybe your just 6 weeks, it would make much more sense.

i had an ultrasound when my gestational sac was measuring 6 weeks 5 days and there was no fetal pole or heartbeat, i went back when i was supposed to be 8 weeks 5 days and the embryo was just measuring 8 weeks, so on the first ultrasound i was just 6 weeks and not 6 weeks 5 days.

i really think your baby is ok and your just a little behind in your dates.

good luck.

HI!
I get this question all the time!
There are some studies that suggest that a low heartbeat in early pregnancy puts the pregnancy at increased risk for miscarriage.  In my office, we often see heartbeats in the 90s in very early pregnancy--5-6 weeks range.  MOST of the time when we repeat the ultrasound at 7 weeks the heart beat has increased to the 160-170 range and the baby is fine.  Of course some pregnancies miscarry too--unfortunately.

If you were my patient, I would definitely repeat an ultrasound.  If the heart beat is within the normal range by 7 weeks your chances are excellent for a healthy baby.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Good luck!

hi... i just wanted to say if you have any doubts about ur doctor always either change drs or get a second opinion. i was 20 weeks 5 days when i went to go get my ultra sound done  to find out the gender and found out the baby didnt have a heart beat. i was told i had to go through a procedure or go through actual labor. so i went to go see a specialist and sure enough it was right. few days later after the preping i miscarried which i was 21 weeks then. while your prego, if u have a feeling or any doubt that something is wrong. get checked. might not be anything. but it might be something. i had a feeling, dreams , and my tail bone hurt. but all my check ups from that the heart beat was 150-170 nice and strong i was told. what im sayin is any doubts GET A SECOND OPINION! it will be for the best!

glad i found this board....i also measured small....found fetal pole, no h/b.  went to radiologist next day and measured 2mm and h/b was 60-70.  been told it doesnt look good but i have had no signs of miscarriage....the opposite..i am exhausted, spend my day in the bathroom and my boobs hurt like mad.  go back again on friday (although thinking of moving it to wed because i am going crazy....) for another u/s with the cheerful radiologist. he's not cheerful...more like gloom and doom.

i the first one you did not see anything and in the second one you saw a baby and a heartbeat, so i guess thats a good thing, maybe your a little bit less than they think.

in my 6 week ultrasound my gestational sac was measuring 6 weeks 5 days and there was no fetal pole or heartbeat.

when i went at 8 weeks i saw my baby moving and heard and saw a healthy heartbeat, so on my first ultrasound my gestational sac was measuring 5 days ahead, maybe thats what happend to you.

good luck

Hi .. it does sound a bit small for the age, is there any chance you have the wrong dates?  some bubs just take a little bit longer to get out of the starting gates .. the fact you saw a heartbeat bodes well .. fingers and toes crossed that there is growth.

I imagine that you will be going back for another u/s soon ... good luck!!!
