HI!
Yes, that is very good advice.  Whenever you have any bleeding during pregnancy, you should report in to your doctor.  If your doctor is not available, there will be someone from the office who is on call and covering emergencies.  I will often have my patients come in to the office to save them some money, but the other good option is to go to the emergency room.  The bottom line is that you need an exam and ultrasound.
If your cervix is open, you are having a miscarriage.  If your cervix is closed and the baby has a good heart beat, you probably have a sub-chorionic hemorrhage.  This is a small separation between the sac and the uterine wall.  It is similar to a bruise.  If the separation is small and the bleeding stops, it will heal and the pregnancy will continue.
If the bleed is large, it can lead to a miscarriage.
Also, don't forget to get a rhogam shot if you have a negative blood type.
I hope everything turns out OK!
