HCG level

by TTC08, Apr 26, 2008 12:53PM
I had my HCG level checked when I was 9 weeks and it was roughly 128,000 which appears normal for 9 weeks.  I am now 11 weeks and I will be seeing my doctor for my first prenatal appt in a little less than 2 weeks.  My question is could my HCG level be normal if there was no fetus?  I have a friend who had a miscarriage and learned after that there was never a fetus and I guess it is a fear of mine.  Any reassurance would be appreciated...this is my first :)  Thanks!

Hello,

You do not need to check an hCG level once you have an established intrauterine pregnancy.  Additionally, it is the placental tissue that produces the hCG, so the hCG can be very high, but that does not reflect the presence or absence of a fetus.  If your doctor detects a fetal heart, then you can be assured there is a fetus.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

I had a miscarriage after my first child and my HCG levels continued to go up, but very slowly.  They were never that high and they did not continue doubling.  I am sure everything is fine.  I was so worry during my third pregnancy the whole time, but she was fine too.  At your appointment they should be able to hear the babies heart beat.  You will be amazed!  Have fun and enjoy it!
