Pain Meds during Labor

I'm shooting for a natural birth. But I am afraid the pain might overwhelm me. I do not want an epidural or C Section. I've read that Demerol though IV is a way to "take the edge off." Is this true? Would I still be able to feel down there? What harmful side effects do I need to be aware of concerning my baby?

My mom kept insisting to me that I'd want pain relief, I had no idea what I was getting into, she didn't think I could handle a natural birth. Then I never even considered pain relief. She got a whole pile of I told you so's! Loved my natural birth!

With my first born I had Demerol through the Iv and it made me really loopy and goofy feeling I hated it I had a epidural after that and it caused really bad back pain which has made this pregnancy a living hell!  I'm going all natural this time no matter how bad it hurts. I was 16 and really scared the first time!!

My mom had me naturally. 4 hours of labor, no drugs, healed quickly. I hope I will probably follow suit. I haven't had any morning sickness. My doctor told me I was disgustingly healthy LOL I have always reacted well to pain. What I don't react so great to is the anxiety. It seems like whenever I do something painful, right before I do it I get anxiety but then afterwards I'm completely fine. For example: My first tattoo, I got huge piece that starts on my rib cage and ends at my hip bone. I was so freakin' nervous but I did so good and healed super quickly. Plus I'm eating right and exercising. I'm hoping I don't have any problems to prevent me from the natural experience!

I will have to remember that one. Last time they gave me something and it didnt do crap so I ended up asking for the epidural.

Yes! I loved demerol LOL I am terrified of the epidural and needle going into your back. I was able to still feel everything but it wasn't as painful. The demerol made me feel weird at first but it went away. I was able to walk around. I don't remember if there were any side effects but both my labors and kids were good with no complications. I plan on using demerol with this one as well.

Normally they dont do csections unless they need to meaning ur not making any progress after a certain amount of time or if the baby is to big or what not and I was up and walking right after giving birth to my oldest .... she was my only natural birth and the rest of my births are all csections .... I prefer the csection over a natural birth but thats just me

I'm currently pregnant with my second child, I delivered my first born completely natural & loved the experience, its all about how well you can tolerate pain, my labor went pretty fast & I found that being able to get out of bed & walk around was very helpful, I plan to deliver this baby natural as well; good luck to you both

Im a ftm and hoping to be able to stand the pain without pain meds....ive read that the iv meds help take the edge and you can walk unlike the epidural. My mom keeps insisting that I have to be strong and do without meds but she had c section with all her pregnancies so she doesn't know how painful it will be but I will try for natural
