Positive Pregnancy Test after Miscarriage

Hi,

I recently had a natural miscarriage, heavy bleeding for about two days and continued normal bleeding for about a week.  My doctor conducted an ultrasound, confirmed the passing of the baby and felt that I did not need a D&C. Three weeks after my misscarriage I had a normal period.  My doctor stated that I was clear to begin trying for a baby after four weeks. At Seven weeks after my miscarriage I began to spot and assumed that I was getting my period again however it stopped after two days. From my research online I understand that many woman get a false positive home pregnancy test after a miscarriage since it can take 4-6 weeks for the horomone levels to return to normal.  It is now eight weeks since my miscarriage and the test is still positive.  Is it still possible to get a false positive after eight weeks?

I have known quite a few friends who have had misscarriages and HCGs levels usually return to normal after 6 weeks or even sooner but it differs from person to person. I am sorry for your lost and hope that it is a real positive. Chances are good though if it has been 8 weeks.

HI!
The best thing to do is to have a quantitative beta hcg done and then repeated in 48 hours.  If it is due to the miscarriage, it will be dropping.  If it is a new pregnancy, it should be rising.  If it is a tubal pregnancy, it may stay about the same.  One other remote possibility is persistent gestational trophoblastic disease.  If you were my patient, I would definitely want you to have the blood tests!
Good luck--I hope its a new pregnancy!

I went to the doctor today and he couldn't tell me anything as I started bleeding lightly yesterday.  For now he scheduled another appointment next week and sent me for blood work.

I am apologize for my rudeness first.  But it is obvious that you do not know about miscarriages to give me that piece of advice.  I shouldn't wait a few weeks and take another test after it has been 8 weeks already.  If the test can still detect hCG levels it means one of two things 1) I am pregnant or 2) part of the embryo are still inside me and I must have an operation before I have an infection.  That was horrible advice wait a few weeks...
I have already contacted my doctor and have an appointment for next week.  I posted the question to learn a little more about how long it can take hCG levels to return to normal and the chances of me being pregnant.

Maybe but I think you should take it again in about a few weeks or wait til your next cycle.
