Pregnancy & depo shot

My neice had been off the depo shot for about 1 year. She decided to go back on it and had a pregnancy blood test on 2/1. It came back negative. On 2/2, she had unprotected sex and then got the depo shot on 2/4. Today she went to have some minor surgery and then made her take a pregnancy urine test which came back positive. They wouldn't do the surgery stating she would have to get another blood test. My question is if she is pregnant, what does or can the depo shot do to the fetus? Would it be prudent for her to have an abortion?

Hi, my names Cassidy and I just had my 2nd miscarriage. I had the depo shot done early January of last year. I became pregnant off of it and had a miscarriage. I didn't think much of and i got pregnant again, which sadly just ended in a missed pregnancy. I had a d and c done today, the dr. is worried that maybe the depo shot could have had a part in the baby dying. I find out for sure what was wrong in 4 days when my  pathology test comes back. Something was wrong because the dr. just believed that it was an ordinary miscarriage but he saw something that was alarming. The depo shot did mess with me, i lost my period off of just the one shot for several months and gained about 40 lbs, which I have lost now. If your neice hasn't had any irregular symptons off of the shot I would think she would be ok. The only thing I suggest is to have a vag. u/s because the depo messes with the lining of the uterus making it almost impossible for the fetus to attatch, possibly causing an etpoic pregnancy. I wold also suggest possibly having bllod work done and maybe a screening for down syndrome, which my mid wife suggested to me, because the depo could, very low risk, cause something to go wrong. I hope your neice has a healthy pregnancy and comes out with a lovley child, best wishes and good luck!

Hello,

The Depo won't harm the developing fetus.  It is not an indication for an abortion.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
