Should I Treat Yeast Infection with Monistat against dr's wishes

Hello everyone,

I am current 4wks pregnant and have been suffering from a yeast infection for the last two weeks.  GYN doesn't want me to use OTC products and recommended the yogurt treatment.  I have been using that for three days with no relief of symptoms (i think it might have made them worse!).  At this point I am considering going over his head and using Monistat.  I have done my research and it seems that it is safe to use during pregnancy.  Basically I just want some advice.  Should I go ahead and use the Monistat against my doctor's wishes?  Please help, very uncomfortable!!!! I will defer to the general consensus  :)

My doctor prescribed Terconazole 7 and told me to use it only as long as needed.  Hopefully 1-2 days at the most.  He is so paranoid about me using medication that now he has me paranoid.  Nicky96, were you in your first trimester when your doctor prescribed it to you?  Thanks!

When I first got preg I had an awful yeast infection.  My Dr gave me Diflucan (pill) I didn't know I was preg at the time , altough I have been told it safe to use during preg.  It helped a little but not completely.  The dr then told me to use Gyne Lotrimin.  That is one of those over the counter treatments.  He said it was comp. safe to use and atthe time I was about 4 wks.

Please let me know your doc's opinion.  I haven't had to use it yet but it's always interesting to hear different points of view.  I'm aware that no medication is better but find comfort in knowing/thinking there is and option if I need one.  Maybe you can get relief from applying topically at least, ask him/her..?!

My doctor confirmed that it was a yeast infection earlier this week but was very against me using any medication for it.  I have an appointment with him tomorrow and will mention the Terazol.  Thanks for the suggestion.  Even though it states everywhere that yeast infections are not harmful to the baby I can't imagine having one for so long can possibly be okay.  luvmybabes, I'm sorry to hear about your experience but thankfully everything turned out okay.  Reading your story has made me more determined to get something for this.  Thanks everyone!

My doctor has given me a refillable prescription for a product called 'Terazol 7' (terconazole)  I don't even have an infection yet but I am very prone to them and says a pregnant woman should always have this in ther home!!!  We are more suseptible than usual and should apply liberally when needed!  I asked of the danger and says this is safe.  He said NO DIFLUCAN PILLS (fluconazole) just stick to terconazole.  Good luck.  (of course you have to be sure it's yeast - but that goes without saying i guess.

I think you need to do something. I know towards the end of my pregnancy I got a yeast infection I couldn't get rid of and it ended up making my water break and me go into labor at 37 weeks. They have a pill out now you can take...that is what they ended up giving me after the birth because I had to so long it would go away and it worked great!!I don't see why you cant use something even in pregnancy. I had surgery on my cervix when I was 2 weeks pregnant because I didn't know and everything was still fine... I guess they are just cautious of everything. Good luck because I know yeast Infections suck!!

Honestly I have no idea but you should ask your doctor if there is anything you can use to treat it since it could cause problems with your pregnancy if left untreated. I'm not sure if they go away on their own and I know that everyday that I had it I swear it got worse. Try changing your undies at least twice a day, dont ******, and sleep without underware. I'm sure it told you that on all the websites you went to but I tried that and it helped as well.

Thanks for responding so quickly!  After I posted my question I did some further research and found a couple of articles advising against using Monistat before 12wks.  So no can do for now.  How long does a yeast infection last if left untreated?  Drama queen that I am, I'm already seeing myself with this until the 12th wk (when I can finally treat it). It just doesn't seem like it's going away after 2 wks!

Hmmm... if your doctor said not to use over the counter products than I would listen to him. However I got a yeast infection during my pregnancy at around 12 weeks and my doctor said it was safe to take (plus it made me feel a lot better). I'm not sure you can take it in early early pregnancy. I would call a different doctor and get a second opinion if I was you.
