That is the BBT method of determining ovulation. You can use any digital thermometer. I personally do not like this method. There are too many variables. However there are websites that help you track your temp. I believe we also have a tracker here on MedHelp.
If you've been trying for 13 months then your doctor should refer you to a fertility specialist if you want. Not that anything is wrong but they are more into getting women pregnant whereas an OBGYN is more into helping a woman throughout her pregnancy.
I prefer the CM (cervical mucous) test for determining ovulation. It's free and it's a lot less stressful than BBT. Plus, the guesswork is minimal unless you have a problem going on that you're not aware of (then your body tends to react differently than someone who does not have a fertility problem).
Finally you can use OPKs as well. They test for your LH surge (which occurs right before ovulation). These can be confusing and not always accurate.
Please let us know if you have any questions, if you want more info, etc. My suggestion is to use at least 2 of the aforementioned methods to increase your odds of finding that fertile window. I suggest CM be at least one of them.
You no longer have to take your vaginal temp (although there are less things to mess with your temp then) but it is called a basal body theomometer (sp?) And they have them at walmart, walgreens, cvs, etc. Take your temp at the same time every morning before doing anything (using the bathroom, drinking, kissing dh anything!) and then when your temp rises .3-.8 degrees (f) then it is assumed that jump is when you ovulated! Good Luck!
