Hi!

There are different types of molar pregnancies that occur in different ways--I will explain the simplest one.  This is a pregnancy that has the wrong number of male chromosomes--one way that this can happen is if two sperm fertilize one egg--then there are double the number of male chromosomes that there are supposed to be.  What happens next is that lots of abnormal placental tissue develops (the sperm are responsible for building the placenta)  and NO fetus develops.  (There is another kind of PARTIAL mole in which there IS a fetus too.)

Obviously when the placenta isn't normal and there is no fetus, you will not end up with a baby.  Usually a D&C is required and as for Kisstin above, you will need to be SURE to follow up hormone levels carefully for at least 6 months to make sure that the placental tissue has not become cancerous and started to re-grow after the D&C.  This is rare, but IMPORTANT.

It is unlikely to happen again, and will not likely interefere with future fertility.

Hope this helps!

I had a molar pregnancy this time last year.  I started spotting at around 7 weeks.  The spotting just went on and on.  Finally they did an ultrasound and found my uterus was shaped very unsually.  Its very confusing.  Basically what I was told is that there was a placenta but no baby and also told it could result in cancer.  They did a d & c and my levels went down nicely.  y hcg was like 31,000 at 7 weeks which is very very high and that is a good indicator if it is a molar pregnancy.  If you think you may be experiencing that, insist that your doctor do bloodwork and an ultrasound.  I am not pregnant via IUI (just found out)  I have PCOS and got pregnant somehow on my own last yr and it ended up being a molar pregnancy.
